WE

ARE

21st CENTURY

COMMUNITY LEARNING CENTERS

Our mission to is provide programs and services that enrich the educational, social, and cultural opportunities of students in our community

General Sherman Community Learning Center

One of the first requirements to open a new 21st Century Community Learning Center is to be licensed by Ohio Department of Job and Family Services.  Both Centers are now equipped with desks, computers, and cabinets that fulfill the requirements for the licensing.  The cabinets contain art supplies, games for free time, outdoor equipment to enhance healthy living and exercise, and some items for dramatic play. Prospective student’s names have been gathered from those fifth graders who in previous years had attended an after school program at one of the elementaries.  Those students and their parents will be contacted in the near future, with plans to open the new programs very soon.

The staffs of the two Centers have met and have begun to plan activities, strategies for teaching reading and math, and ways to actively keep the junior high student involved. All of the staff members are excited about getting the program underway

West After School Center

We’ve just begun a new school year here at WASC and we have introduced many new staff members to the students.  The staff is as follows: Jane Violand-Academic Coach: K-1st grade, Sarah Stebelton-Academic Coach: Math/Computers, and Connie Smith-Program Assistant: Leaptrack.  We welcome back Gina Pressler, Tina Nixon, Linda Anderson, and Devon Schoonover.

The children are looking forward to another wonderful year here at the West After School Center and anticipating all the exciting activities planned for our Fun Fridays.

East Community Learning Center

Things are getting underway at ECLC, with students stepping right into the routine of math, homework, and Leaptrack.  They are also enjoying the rest of the summer weather before fall settles in.  Miss Fiore attended the East School picnic on Monday and met the families of the students.

Cedar Heights Community Learning

Our first day of programming at Cedar Heights consisted of reviewing the rules and meeting new students and staff. We also worked on homework, math, and reading skills. In addition, dinner was enjoyed by the students.  Meet Kylee, who is a second grader in Ms. Hodson's class at Cedar Heights and a member of the Cedar Heights CLC.  Kylee enjoys singing, dancing, and playing.

Tallmadge Community Learning Center

The Tallmadge Community Learning Center is off to a great start.  With 20 students on the first day, we jumped right into our routine and assessment.  Natalie Lindsey and Andreia Rohr helped the students keep up with their homework while Cindy Andres kept their math skills sharp.  During reading, Mary Paresta, with help from Michael Ardrey, assessed the students’ skills with the Leaptrack program.  Finally, Tami Hedges helped the first grade and kindergarten students adjust to the beginning of school and assessed their skills both academically and socially.

On Tuesday, we had our first fire drill of the school year, performing very well.  The week wrapped up with board games and kickball on Fun Friday.  Overall, it has been an encouraging and exciting beginning to what we expect to be our best year ever.
