Zumba is a popular workout routine that combines Latin and international dance moves. Zumbatomic is a form of Zumba specifically for kids. Miss Maria Mulder, who is certified in both Zumba and Zumbatomic, came on Friday to share some of these international dance moves with us. She incorporated these dances into popular songs that the children enjoyed. Students also celebrated the first day of autumn by reading stories about the season and making tissue paper pumpkins.

Youth Development
|
The second week of Youth Development at Cedar Heights was awesome! We focused on the 6 rules to use when we get angry. We learned that it is OKAY to get mad, because feeling angry or mad is a sign that something is wrong. However, we also learned that feeling angry does not allow us to behave inappropriately. The 6 rules tell us what NOT TO DO when we get angry. We cannot hurt ourselves, others, or property with our hands, feet, or voice; we also cannot attack the PERSON we are having a conflict with. Instead, we need to focus on attacking the PROBLEM that has made us angry. We also learned what TO DO when we get angry. We know the very first thing we should do when we start to get angry is stop. Taking a step back allows us to calm down and find out what is really bothering us. We also need to listen to one another, care about one another’s feelings, and be responsible for what we say and do. The students at Cedar Heights did an EXCELLENT job this week learning our 6 rules! |

Thanks to all of the parents who participated in our TCLC Open House on Wednesday. I hope it was informative and gave you a good idea of what your students do for two and a half hours every day when they are here. After the mini-rotations, we had some cookies and punch, and were able to visit with each other. Thanks again to those who participated. We have made a minor change to our rotations. While we previously had our first graders self-contained in a classroom during the rotations, we have decided to combine them with our second graders. This gives them a chance to have a little more variation, as well as to get up and get moving every 30 minutes. On Friday, Mr. Dorion stopped by with some great games that we hadn’t yet played here at TCLC. The games gave the students a chance to work on their overhand toss, as well as their hand-eye coordination. This was all accomplished while having a lot of fun. Thanks, Mr. Dorion.

This week, the students of the West After School Center focused on the Aboriginal culture of Australia. Mrs. Draper created an art project which focused on the Aborigines’ unique way of telling stories about their history and beliefs. The Aboriginal people have marked special places all over Australia with paintings and carvings of animals and hunters. They are famous for their paintings made with tiny dots. Our students used a variety of beans to create art that tells about the animals found in Australia. We used this art lesson to teach about the continent, the culture, and the climate of this country.

Open House was held at General Sherman Community Learning Center on Thursday, September 22. Parents were invited to see what their children accomplish at the Center. Parents and friends logged onto the computers and watched their children complete Math IXL, noting that the problems worked were in accordance with the concepts taught in class that day. Students also went to progress book and checked their grades and homework assignments. Finally, the students taught their parents how to make one of their favorite paper airplanes, fly the plane, and record the mean of the three flights. Parents were coming up with some of their own designs. In preparation for the Open House, the General Sherman students made cookies. Mrs. Richard guided the students through some predictions of how long the cookies should bake, and what to do if they baked too long or not long enough. Some of the students admitted they had never made cookies before. The Open House was a great success, with 70% of the parents attending.
