The West After School Center was officially awarded a Step Up to Quality
"One Star" Achievement Rating on Monday, Sept. 22 for its commitment to
achieving high levels of quality programming and services. This
award, and the monetary provisions that accompany it, is shared with the
Lancaster-Fairfield Community Action Head Start who provide the Early
Learning Initiative (ELI) preschool classes at the WASC.

MEAL PROGRAMS at the WASC
Busy parents can take advantage of the availability of supper at the
WASC, Cedar Heights, and Tallmadge, Monday-Friday, throughout the year.
The snacks we serve are free, and the supper program (5:30-6:00 pm) is
open to any child in our programs or others that would sign up for
supper, based on qualification requirements similar to the school lunch
program. The WASC is a sponsor of afterschool meals for the centers
serving children at East, West, Cedar Heights, and Tallmadge. |

Students were given a task
by Ashley Draper, the WASC Art Academic Coach, to create a self portrait
of themselves. Several students followed in the example of the famous
artist Pablo Picasso. This sample of the students work is in progress
and the students were encouraged to explore their imagination to create
an image reflective of them.

The Tallmadge Community
Learning Center will begin serving students on Monday, September 29th.
Staff has been hired and enrollment is currently underway. We look
forward to a successful year in our new location. |

West After School Center |
 |
Academic Coach Gina Pressler uses dominoes to
reinforce number recognition. They are also used to practice
addition facts with the younger students. She gives them the sum and
asks how many have the equation that equals the answer. She is also
reinforcing multiplication facts with the older students. Students
love this so much that Mrs. Pressler has brought in larger number
value dominoes so that they can continue with higher values.

Did you know that Jeromey Sheets (WASC Ex-officio
board member) and his wife Kerry are the proud parents of twins?
Joshua and Joanna Sheets arrived September 22 and are doing fine - as
are their sleep deprived parents! Congratulations.
The WASC will soon install video cameras that will
help neighbors and police further secure our outdoor environment and cut
down on trespassers and others with inappropriate conduct near our
center on weekends. Thanks, Tim Huston, for spearheading this important
project.
WASC staff members are mentoring leaders who
are planning before and after school programs in Logan and Pickerington.
The WASC thanks the Ohio State Extension -
Fairfield County for the donation of computers worth over $2,000 for the
Tallmadge Community Learning Center.
Copies of the WASC 2007-2008 are available for
pick up and distribution beginning October 1. If you can help get copies
placed in prominent locations in our community, stop by and speak with
us.
The WASC receives surplus bread and baked good
from Panera Bread for distribution on weekends. Stop by for some!
