AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAMMING NEWS

See what we've been doing this week -- after-school, and meet some of the special people that make our programs work!

Click HERE to see our first family gathering of the year.

5th grade students at the Cedar CLC are proudly showing their art work which is progress - abstract landscapes.  See more about this project in the SMART ART segment in Healthy Living for Kids (click HERE).

East Community Learning Center

East CLC students had fun last week printing their fingerprints and trying to identify the type ie: whorl, loop, and arch.  Discussions were held about how each person's fingerprints are unique. Next students will write an analogy of what their fingerprint reminds them of this week at Fun Friday.

The younger students were using magic markers to uncover pictures in art.

Tallmadge Community Learning Center

On September 18, the Tallmadge Community Learning Center recognized two HEROES of the week, Billy Beverly and Derek Olive. Both students displayed the qualities we like to see in Tallmadge students. They were helpful to their fellow students and staff members and were respectful of others. Monday-Thursday in the after school program, the Tallmadge CLC staff assessed the students in math and reading. The students are working on basic facts in math, and in reading they are on their own individualized learning path to enhance their reading skills. We really appreciate the good behavior and hard work put forth by all the students in the program.

While the weather is nice in September, we enjoy our Friday Fun Day recreational activities outdoors with structured games.

John Chapman, known to most as Johnny Appleseed, was born 235 years ago on Sept. 26. The students at the WASC celebrated his life by enjoying the fruits of his labors, Macintosh, Golden Delicious and Red Delicious apples. We also watched his life story describing his journey over the 100,000 square miles in the Midwest. The last known living apple tree planted by Johnny still grows on a farm in Nova, Ohio.

On October 8, 2009, Jumpstart and Pearson Foundation will hold their annual Read for the Record Campaign, which encourages teens and adults from across the country to read with young children. This year the official book of Jumpstart’s Read for the Record campaign is The Very Hungry Caterpillar, by Eric Carle. By encouraging a single, common day of reading engagement where participants read the same book, Jumpstart hopes to set a new world record and raise awareness about the number of children entering kindergarten unprepared.

COMMUNITY NEWS

You can help support the

West After School Center

every time you shop at your local Krogers.  It's simple.  Just sign up and every time you shop and have your Krogers Plus Card scanned, a portion of the amount comes to the West After School Center. Encourage your friends to help us - and support our mission!

TO USE THE KROGER COMMUNITY REWARDS PROGRAM:

  1. Pick up a copy of the registration form from the WASC. It has the scanbar code on it.

  2. Simply take the form to the Customer Service Desk at your local Kroger store. They will scan it and your Kroger Plus Card, and with 72 hours a percentage of everything purchased at Krogers comes to the WASC - between now and April 30, 2010.

Volunteers are joining all WASC program sites NOW!

Planning is in process to partner with mentors from Big Brothers/Big Sisters and Fisher Catholic High School. Bring your professional colleagues and join us - and turn a young child on to learning!

The West After School Center is a provider for the Ohio Benefit Bank. If you are in need of assistance related to childcare, food, health coverage or home energy needs, please call the WASC at 653-5678 and set up an appointment to do a quick check to see if you might qualify for help.

Preventing the Flu: Good Health Habits Can Help Stop Germs

Whether we choose to believe it or not, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) predicts that our country and others in the northern hemisphere will experience an outbreak, possibly a pandemic, of the H1N1 Flu as the weather turns colder in the coming weeks and months. Preparation is important to effectively deal with what might transpire. We can minimize the effects of the flu and its spread by following some good health habits.

  1. Avoid close contact. Avoid close contact with people who are sick. When you are sick, keep your distance from others to protect them from getting sick too. Stay home when you are sick.

  2. Stay home from work, afterschool, childcare, school, and errands when you are sick, except to seek medical care.  Keep sick children at home except to see medical care. You will help prevent others from catching the illness. Cover your mouth and nose.

  3. Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it. Learn to "sneeze in your sleeve."

  4. Wash your hands often. Washing your hands and the hands of your children often will help protect you from germs.

  5. Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs are often spread when a person touches something that is contaminated with germs and then touches his or her eyes, nose, or mouth.

  6. Practice other good health habits. Get plenty of sleep, be physically active, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritious food.

There is no vaccine available at this time for this new flu virus, so it is important for people living in the affected areas to take steps to prevent spreading the virus to others. If people are ill, they should stay at home and limit contact with others, except to seek medical care. Healthy residents living in impacted areas should take the everyday preventive actions listed above.
People who develop an illness with fever and respiratory symptoms, such as cough and runny nose, and possibly other symptoms, such as body aches, nausea, or vomiting or diarrhea, should contact their health care provider. Their health care provider will determine whether influenza testing is needed.

NAA and BAM Radio Network have partnered to bring you NAA Radio. Executive Director Judy Nee hosts the program that will focus on the topics you really care about. Each brief segment of NAA radio will bring afterschool professionals the latest insights, practices and developments in the care of children and youth during their out-of-school hours.

Hear what Sandi Delack, President of the National Association of School Nurses, recommends we can be doing to prepare what may be an extraordinary flue season.

These resources are becoming part of a training workshop being planned by the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP) and the National AfterSchool Association (NAA) to promote collaboration between principals and after-school program leaders and the development of extended learning opportunities for children. Plans for developing a train-the-trainer professional development program for principals in Ohio will soon be complete with a goal of preparing teams of principals and after-school leaders to engage and assist others in all parts of the state in this important and ongoing work.

FITNESS, NUTRITION and HEALTHY LIVING for KIDS

Watch  Healthy Living for Kids weekly on the Lancaster Schools Television Network

The Goals for our Television Program:

  1. Create and sustain a community dialogue and awareness campaign that helps every individual learn to make healthy choices about what and how much they eat as well as how much daily exercise they get.

  2. Encourage children to engage in healthy and productive extra curricular activities at home and at school.

  3. Teach families how to prepare foods and economical family meals and snacks.

  4. Showcase the wealth of community resources and personnel that can help kids and families develop healthy lifestyles.

  5. Demonstrate the positive impact and benefits that participation in before and after school programs can have on children's mental health and social development.

SMART ART is featured in many of our shows. The arts play a powerful role in the development of healthy kid and often become the "hook" that interests kids in all kinds of learning. Click HERE to see what the kids at the Cedar CLC are learning and creating.

Look for our "Fall Farm Show" airing  now and learn where healthy food comes from - and how kids can gain multiple health benefits spending time down on the farm.
