Community Learning Center

Everything
gets better with time-especially Time Warner! Thomas Ewing and General
Sherman Junior Highs are getting "up to speed" with the installation of
their cable and telephone lines. Progress is being made toward opening
the after school programs at the two locations. Students are being
interviewed, and offices are being prepared. Since we have just received
licensing from Ohio Job and Family Services, the Centers will be ready
to open for business soon. The first unit will include games from the
"Minute to Win It" TV show. Look for upcoming updates! |

West After
School Center
|
The
Parents’ Night Tailgate Party here at the West After School Center was a
huge success. Several parents accompanied their children for the games,
face painting and dinner. Former Gales football players, Austin
Robitzer and Ryan Curry, encouraged our students to achieve good grades
and become involved in sports. The students then had an opportunity to
wear a Gales football jersey and have their picture taken with the
players. Mrs. Garrett, principal at West Elementary, and some West
staff members attended our Open House and they, too, participated in the
event. |

East Community
Learning Center
 |
On
Friday, Mrs. McBroom taught us about heraldry. After learning about the
different symbols, metals, and colors used, students started making
their own coats of arms.
We
also had a Connect Four tournament between all students. Although some
games became intense, everyone practiced good sportsmanship!

Community Learning
 |
Mrs. Hachat
and the first grade are working hard together reading baggy books,
working on spelling words and sharpening basic math skills. In
homework, Miss Smith is doing a good job keeping students on task and
completing their assignments. Last week in math, Mrs. Warner taught the
students several new games to reinforce math skills. |

Tallmadge
Community Learning Center
 |
We
had our TCLC Parent Open House on Thursday, September 16th.
Parents had an opportunity to see what their children do every day in
the after school program. They were able to participate in
“mini-rotations” of math Flash Master, reading Leap Track and homework.
We also had a great time playing corn hole, ladder ball and eating
dinner.
Our
enrollment has grown to over 30 students. We still have room for more
students and are in the process of contacting parents whose children
have been recommended for the program by their teachers.
Last Friday, we tie-dyed T-shirts and they turned out great. Make sure
to look at the photo in this update. On Friday of this week, we will be
having a martial arts instructor come in to lead us through some
exercises. We are looking forward to getting our bodies moving and
ending the week on a positive note. |

Community Care Day
This
week at the West After School Center, Lancaster City Police Department
volunteered its time to complete maintenance projects here at the WASC
building. September 15, 2010, was Community Care Day. Chief Bailey and
a group of his men responded by helping us at the Center. A special
thanks to the officers at LPD for the many ways they serve our community.
