IT'S OFFICIAL!!!

The West After School Center has been awarded a One Star Rating in the Ohio Department of Job and Family Service Step-Up-to Quality Rating System. Step Up to Quality (SUTQ) is a statewide, voluntary rating system for licensed childcare and afterschool programs designed to move programs above established health, safety, and program standards and to help parents select quality programming for their children. We share this rating and honor with colleagues from the Lancaster-Fairfield Community Action Head Start (ELI programs) who share our ODJFS license. Commendations to all our staff and particularly Jane Hart (WASC) and Kathleen Cortleesa (Head Start) who have spearheaded this effort. We join the Child's Play Learning Center in Pickerington as the only other SUTQ-Rated afterschool program in Fairfield County.

Join us on September 22, 10:00 a.m. for an official press conference announcing this award!

We are back! It is great to have students returning to our center. We opened the 21st CCLC after school programs and the WASC and Cedar CLC on Monday with approximately 45 students attending both sites. More students are registering each day.  Thanks to all school personnel who have helped us identify and register the targeted students for our program purposes.

Monday, September 15, we welcome our volunteers to the program. If you know someone who would like to give back and volunteer one afternoon per week at any of our after school centers, contact us at the WASC (653-5678) for further information. People are always welcome to come and observe - and once they do, they'll quickly see mentoring a young child to be something can do and will enjoy.

The Tallmadge CLC opens Monday, September 22.

New Partnership Announced

Thanks to a partnership organized by Julie Bibler, WASC Afterschool Program Administrator and Stacey Blankenship of the Fairfield Christian Church, our families will have access to surplus baked goods from Panera Bread - one of Lancaster's newest restaurants in the Ety Road retail development center. Panera Bread was looking for an outlet for their surplus items. Fairfield Christian Church took the project on as an outreach program was looking for a community non-profit to distribute the items. We were looking for a way to provide food on weekends for families. Seek and ye shall find! We will receive a delivery each Friday for distribution for the weekend. Stop by the WASC for further information.

MEAL PROGRAMS at the WASC

Busy parents can take advantage of the availability of supper at the WASC, Cedar Heights, and Tallmadge, Monday-Friday, throughout the year.  The snacks we serve are free, and the supper program (5:30-6:00 pm) is open to any child in our programs or others that would sign up for supper, based on qualification requirements similar to the school lunch program. The WASC is a sponsor of afterschool meals for the centers serving children at East, West, Cedar Heights, and Tallmadge.

A brief introduction and explanation of the 21st Century Community Learning Centers Program (21stCCLC)

These programs, administered by the states, support the creation of community learning centers that provide academic enrichment opportunities during non-school hours for children, particularly students who attend high-poverty and low-performing schools. The programs help students meet state and local student standards in core academic subjects, such as reading and math. They offer students a broad array of enrichment activities that can complement their regular academic programs and offer literacy and other educational services to the families of participating children.
