WE

ARE

21st CENTURY

COMMUNITY LEARNING CENTERS

Our mission to is provide programs and services that enrich the educational, social, and cultural opportunities of students in our community

General Sherman Community Learning Center

Thomas Ewing Community Learning Center

Progress is being made in getting the new after school sites open at the two junior high schools. Students need to be recruited and recommended; and to help make families aware of the upcoming program, information was available during Open House.  As parents followed their child's schedule, time was available during lunch and study hall times where they could visit with Mrs. Ashly Draper and Mrs. Nan Rowe and discuss plans for the programs. Mrs. Draper will begin to interview prospective students- checking interest levels on various activities and asking teachers for referrals.  When this process is completed, parents will be contacted to fill out the appropriate paperwork from Job and Family Services for admittance to the program.   Plans are underway to open the Center as soon as the license from Job and Family is granted.

West After School Center

We’ve just completed our first full week here at the West After School Center and are back on Track (Leap Track).  This week has been a week of reassessing and getting reacquainted. WASC welcomes back Keaton Porter.  This is Keaton’s fourth year at WASC and he is delighted to be back. We’ve focused all week on academics and completing projects for our Parent’s Night Tailgate Party on Friday, Sept. 10, 2010.  This is an exciting time here at the Center.

East Community Learning Center

Students at ECLC enjoyed the nice weather on Friday by playing outside.  They also had a chance to play board games and participate in various activities on the computer.  During reading time, we read a Reader’s Theater called “Coopersville Caper.”  Students and staff got to act out the parts of the characters and had a great time.

Cedar Heights Community Learning

On Friday at the Cedar Community Learning Center, we enjoyed our first Fun Friday.  We took advantage of the lovely weather and played outside. Mr. Gang and Mrs. Murdock played on the jungle gym with us while Miss Smith shared her basketball skills. Mrs. Hachat read from one of her favorite books, The Giving Tree.  We have enjoyed Mrs. Hachat reading to us every day in the  afterschool program.

Tallmadge Community Learning Center

Here we are at the Tallmadge Community Learning Center in our second week and things have gone smoothly thus far.  We continue to grow in our enrollment and look forward to incorporating the new students into our routine.

On Thursday, September 9th, Randy Au, the TCLC Site Administrator, attended the Tallmadge Open House and picnic.  For our second Fun Friday, we “tie dyed” t-shirts and bandanas.  We will have photos with next week’s update.

Finally, we have scheduled our TCLC parent Open House for Thursday, September 16th.  We are going to have the parents do shortened rotations with their children and then play games and eat dinner.  I am looking forward to having a great turnout.

COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS

Do you have one hour a week to make a difference in the life of a child?

We need volunteers at all our locations (WASC, East, Cedar Heights and Tallmadge)

To learn more, contact Chris Kuttler at 653-5678
Our volunteers are key to our success.

We appreciate the many community agencies that help students and families with acquisition of their back to school supplies. Likewise, with a limited budget and four centers to provide for, the West After School Center is always in need of the list at the right.

Community Care Day

Each September, the United Way of Fairfield County organizes a community volunteer activity to provide service to non-profit agencies such as the WASC. On September 15, we welcome Chief Bailey and officers from the Lancaster Police Dept. who will help with various improvement projects here at our center.

Training Opportunities

Many of the area providers need these required training opportunities to meet licensing requirements for ODJFS.  If interested in joining us and taking advantage of local training, contact Chris Kuttler at the WASC, 653-5678, to reserve a spot.
