The WASC Board of Directors and staffs at each of our sites invite parents to our upcoming after-school tailgating picnics.  The Cedar Community Learning Center administrators completed a successful license review this week with their specialist from the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services. The staff also attended the Cedar Happening and connected with many parents of prospective enrollees.  20 students have been attending the program this week.
       

East Community Learning Center

The East Community Learning Center is opening Tuesday, September 8. A new operating license has been obtained from the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services now that the program is officially owned and operated as a WASC site. 30 students are expected Tuesday, 15 others are in process. The new site director for the East CLC is Nan Rowe, assisted by Robin McBroom.

The Tallmadge Community Learning Center is open under new leadership. New site administrator, Michele Ritchlin, and Student and Family Coordinator, have been busy completing staff interviews, hiring, and program set up. 24 students are registered and attending, many more in  process.

The WASC has 34 students attending this week. The WASC site director is Julie Bibler, assisted by Ashley Fiore. Chris Kuttler is the WASC office manager.

Our morning childcare students enjoy combining math skills and measurement before they go to school each day by counting chain links and making chains. Teacher Amie Azbell has them so excited about what they've learned, that they wanted to see how many body lengths their chain was, and did so by laying it out on the floor and lying next to it and creating their own "human chain". These students spend their time after parents go to work in a constructive manner and the extended learning opportunities they have help them be alert and prepared as their school day begins.

COMMUNITY NEWS
We continue to accept registrations for our 21st CCLC after-school and childcare programs at all of our program sites. If you know of children that should be referred, now is the time to make us aware so that services can be provided.

every time you shop at your local Krogers.  It's simple.  Just sign up and every time you shop and have your Krogers Plus Card scanned, a portion of the amount comes to the West After School Center. Encourage your friends to help us - and support our mission!

all WASC staff members are encouraged to enroll this weekend.

TO USE THE KROGER COMMUNITY REWARDS PROGRAM:

  1. Pick up a copy of the registration form from the WASC. It has the scanbar code on it.

  2. Simply take the form to the Customer Service Desk at your local Kroger store. They will scan it and your Kroger Plus Card, and with 72 hours a percentage of everything purchased at Krogers comes to the WASC - between now and April 30, 2010.
     

 

 

Volunteers will be joining all WASC program sites in September. There will be on orientation the week of September 8 and assignments tutoring children being the week of September 14.

 

Planning is in process to partner with mentors from Big Brothers/Big Sisters and Fisher Catholic High School. Bring your professional colleagues and join us - and turn a young child on to learning!

Community Care Day

Each September, the United Way of Fairfield County

organizes a community volunteer activity to provide service to non-profit agencies such as the WASC. On September 15, we welcome Chief Bailey and officers from the Lancaster Police Dept. who will help with various improvement projects here at our center.
 

Preventing the Flu: Good Health Habits Can Help Stop Germs

Whether we choose to believe it or not, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) predicts that our country and others in the northern hemisphere will experience an outbreak, possibly a pandemic, of the H1N1 Flu as the weather turns colder in the coming weeks and months. Preparation is important to effectively deal with what might transpire. We can minimize the effects of the flu and its spread by following some good health habits.

  1. Avoid close contact. Avoid close contact with people who are sick. When you are sick, keep your distance from others to protect them from getting sick too. Stay home when you are sick.

  2. Stay home from work, afterschool, childcare, school, and errands when you are sick, except to seek medical care.  Keep sick children at home except to see medical care. You will help prevent others from catching the illness. Cover your mouth and nose.

  3. Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it. Learn to "sneeze in your sleeve."

  4. Wash your hands often. Washing your hands and the hands of your children often will help protect you from germs.

  5. Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs are often spread when a person touches something that is contaminated with germs and then touches his or her eyes, nose, or mouth.

  6. Practice other good health habits. Get plenty of sleep, be physically active, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritious food.

There is no vaccine available at this time for this new flu virus, so it is important for people living in the affected areas to take steps to prevent spreading the virus to others. If people are ill, they should stay at home and limit contact with others, except to seek medical care. Healthy residents living in impacted areas should take the everyday preventive actions listed above.
People who develop an illness with fever and respiratory symptoms, such as cough and runny nose, and possibly other symptoms, such as body aches, nausea, or vomiting or diarrhea, should contact their health care provider. Their health care provider will determine whether influenza testing is needed.

Since the federal administration of the 21st Century Community Learning Center (21st CCLC) grants was transferred to the states, most of the 50 states have made four or more rounds of new grants. There are now 3,309 grants funding afterschool programs serving 1,456,447 children and youth in 9,824 school-based and community-based centers across the
country. Other characteristics:

  • The average grant size for 2006 grantees was $310,685.

  • On average, there are three centers/sites per grant with an annual budget of $104,000. The average
    annual cost per student ranges from $673 to $1,215.

  • About two in three grantees are awarded to school districts and about one in five grantees are made to community-based organizations, yet roughly nine in ten centers are located in schools.

  • 91 percent of centers are open four or more days per week and 67 percent of centers are open at
    least 11 hours per week.

These resources are becoming part of a training workshop being planned by the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP) and the National AfterSchool Association (NAA) to promote collaboration between principals and after-school program leaders and the development of extended learning opportunities for children. Plans for developing a train-the-trainer professional development program for principals in Ohio will soon be complete with a goal of preparing teams of principals and after-school leaders to engage and assist others in all parts of the state in this important and ongoing work.

Healthy After-School Snacks --- Portion control is the Key!

For most of us, there are no bad foods, just bad portions. The reality is that growing kids need the starches and calories that come from many foods, but not 5 servings of them (what many kids consume who aren't supervised after school). Our after-school snacks and suppers meet the USDA required portion sizes for school-age children as well as the recommended servings of fruits, vegetables, grains, etc. found at MyPyramid.gov

Our A.M. childcare students enjoy a brisk game of Wii Boxing before getting  ready for school. They get the blood flowing and burn calories and are wide awake for learning in their classrooms. Come try this with some time - it isn't easy!
