General Sherman Community Learning Center

Thomas Ewing Community Learning Center

The Thomas Ewing and General Sherman After School Programs were launched this week with a total of 30 students participating. Students and staff played the Minute To Win It game "Back Flip"-using pencils to flip off the back of your hand-beginning with one pencil and increasing to 12 pencils flipped.  It is quite a challenge to flip the pencils in groups of 2 in one minute. By the end of the week, skill levels had improved tremendously!   Math IXL is an on-line math program that will be used in the after school program that correlates with grade level math.  Each participant has been given a user name and password so they can work to improve their math skills. The students are in their introductory phase of the program-we will keep you updated as they progress into the development stage.  The program has many new things to offer the children.  Keep looking each week for all the fun and exciting news from Thomas Ewing and General Sherman.

West After School Center

Miss Ashly Draper taught our students at the West After School Center painting techniques by artist, Bob Ross.  Mr. Ross is famous for using simplistic step-by-step instructions in teaching amateurs how to paint beautiful landscapes.  Our caption says it all- “Look At Us.”  In one week, our students had the opportunity to take a simple outline and make it into a work of art.

East Community Learning Center

Mrs. Warner visited ECLC last week to teach us how to cup stack.  Students learned how to do a “three-six-three” stack and held relay races.  We also finished our heraldry shields and played outside. 

Cedar Heights Community Learning

We are moving right along at Cedar Heights Community Learning Center.  We have 38 students currently enrolled in our program and are enrolling new students every week. We are working hard in math, homework and Leap Track Monday through Thursday. Last Friday, Mr. Dorion visited Cedar Heights and taught us about yo-yo’s and all the tricks we can do with them.  Mrs. Tracey took us to the computer lab and let us have some free time on the computers to play educational games and explore our creative side with art on the computer. 

Tallmadge Community Learning Center

Things continue to heat up here at Tallmadge Community Learning Center.  In addition to our regular math, reading and homework rotations, Ashly Draper planned an art activity that we worked on all week.  On Friday, Ashly visited our site to complete the project with our students.  The project was based on Bob Ross’ methods and it turned out great.   

On Wednesday, Brian Dorian visited Tallmadge and instructed the students on how to use a yo-yo.  He showed the students some tricks such as “walking the dog” and “around the world.”  Hopefully, when Mr. Dorian returns, he will see how much the students have progressed with their yo-yo skills.

The break in the weather was a welcomed relief.  This was especially true for the math and Leap Track rotations, that are stationed in the cafeteria which is not air conditioned.  The students seemed to concentrate better with the cooler temperatures.  We are looking forward to more “football” weather.
