afternoon of net and rope climbing. The students develop
coordination and gain confidence by succeeding in tasks unfamiliar
to them. In addition to working on these skills, the students are

In anticipation of author Margaret Wolford's visit, Mrs. Pressler and Ms. Fiore are reading her book, No Sugar Coating, to the students at WASC. What a great way to spend snack time listening to Alana's journal as she solves a mystery or two and learns a lesson about life. You might want to pick up a copy and read it for yourself! |

What you can do to protect yourself from the Swine Flu… (source: www.examiner.com) Follow some common sense protections emphasized for any flu, including seasonal flu:
And finally no, you can’t get the swine flu from eating pork. The reason is the influenza viruses are not transmitted by food. You can not get swine influenza from eating pork or pork products. Eating properly handled cooked pork and/or a pork product is safe. Cooking pork to an internal temperature of 160°F kills the swine flu virus as it does other bacteria and viruses. |

Each afternoon across the U.S., 15 million children--more than a quarter of our children--are alone and unsupervised after school. The parents of 18 million would enroll their children in an afterschool program, if one were available. These are some of the key findings from the nation’s most in-depth study of how America’s children spend their afternoons. America After 3PM was sponsored by the JCPenney Afterschool Fund. The 2009 report, conducted for the Afterschool Alliance, surveyed nearly 30,000 households across the United States. The survey finds that 8.4 million children participate in an afterschool program, an increase of nearly 3 million children over the past five years. While this is encouraging, there is still work to be done. The number of children left alone after the school day ends has risen to 15.1 million children - an increase of 800,000 children - since the 2004 edition of America After 3PM.
Hawaii Arizona New York California New Jersey Virginia New Mexico Florida Texas North Carolina |
In Ohio, 851
households were surveyed for this study. Among those households, 34
percent qualified for free or reduced price lunch, 3 percent were
Hispanic and 13 percent were African-American. According to U.S.
Department of Education data from 2005-2006, the total school enrollment
in Ohio was 2,015,421, which is the foundation for all statewide
projections in Ohio After 3PM. |
Ohio has significant unmet needs for afterschool programming. But comparatively, Ohio is among six states having made the greatest progress in afterschool participation
