The WASC Board extends its appreciation to the principals of our program sites at East, West, Tallmadge and West for their input and support of afterschool programming during our recent October luncheon and our Lights On After School Television Show (Healthy Living for Kids) taping.
 

October 20-24 is School Bus Safety Week. If you have five minutes, on the link at the right, click and read a soapbox expose comparing the work of school bus drivers and school leaders.

Cedar Community Learning Center

This has been "Art Week" again at Cedar CLC and the students worked at making pumpkins and masks. The students will spend most of their time on their Friday Fun Day completing the art projects, and they certainly enjoy their time with art and art teacher Ashly Draper.

We are grateful to be able to provide quality art instruction as part of the after school program. Every week that passes when it is not "Art Week" the students constantly ask if they will have art everyday. Art is critical and much needed not just in after school, but in the everyday aspect of the students elementary experience. 
 
 

Tallmadge Community Learning Center

Tallmadge CLC students have begun working with the Leap Track Reading Program. Leap Track is used in all the after school programs in Lancaster to help students improve their reading skills. The students at Tallmadge enjoy using this program and are pleased with themselves to be making progress with development of their skills.


 
 

West After School Center

 

The students at the West After School Center use time everyday to work on the computers. They practice typing their spelling words, which helps them to get ready for that week's test and also helps increase practice time, build comfort and familiarity with the keyboard.


 
 

MEAL PROGRAMS at the WASC

Busy parents can take advantage of the availability of supper at the WASC, Cedar Heights, and Tallmadge, Monday-Friday, throughout the year.  The snacks we serve are free, and the supper program (5:30-6:00 pm) is open to any child in our programs or others that would sign up for supper, based on qualification requirements similar to the school lunch program. The WASC is a sponsor of afterschool meals for the centers serving children at East, West, Cedar Heights, and Tallmadge.

Our Goals:

1.  Create and sustain a community dialogue and awareness campaign that helps every individual learn to make healthy choices about what and how much they eat as well as how much daily exercise they get. 

2.  Encourage children to engage in healthy and productive extra curricular activities at home and at school.

3.  Teach families how to prepare meals and economical family meals and snacks.

4.  Showcase the wealth of community resources and personnel that can help kids and families develop healthy lifestyles.

5.  Demonstrate the positive impact and benefits that participation in before and after school programs can have on children's mental health and social development.
