Our mission to is provide programs and services that enrich the educational, social, and cultural opportunities of students in our community

General Sherman Community Learning Center

Thomas Ewing Community Learning Center

Computers, selecting software, installing software, computers, selecting software, installing software......is what you hear coming from the sites at Thomas Ewing and General Sherman in anticipation of opening October 4 at Sherman and October 5 at Ewing. It is very exciting to have enrolled students waiting for the first day of after school!  Mrs. Draper is using her computer knowledge to make the final touches to the offices.  Staff members have been hired and trained, and are ready to get the program underway.  The first task the students will be involved with is understanding Progress Report and how it relates to their success in the classroom. Watch for more to come in future weeks.

West After School Center

One of the most popular Fun Friday activities is cup-stacking, and on September 17, Mrs. Warner and her two children once again came to WASC and challenged our students with new techniques.  There was never a dull moment, with 30 children racing to the finish in a tag-team event.

On October 7, 2010, Jumpstart and Pearson Foundation will hold their annual Read for the Record Campaign, which encourages teens and adults from across the country to read with young children. This year the official book of Jumpstart’s Read for the Record campaign is The Snowy Day, by Ezra Jack Keats. By encouraging a single, common day of reading engagement where participants read the same book, Jumpstart hopes to set a new world record and raise awareness about the number of children entering kindergarten unprepared.

East Community Learning Center

East Community Learning Center held our Open House last Friday.  Students and their families enjoyed many different activities.  Families showed good sportsmanship when playing Blongo Ball and basketball.  We showed our creative sides when creating apple prints and face painting.  Finally, we celebrated Johnny Appleseed’s birthday with an apple tasting.  Students and their families had the chance to learn about the different types of apples and what they are used for.  Three students were hesitant to participate in the apple tasting but, after trying the apples, realized that they loved eating them!

Cedar Heights Community Learning

Last week at Cedar Heights, we had our Open House.  We had a great turnout with more than 60 in attendance. We showed our families all the things we do in afterschool.  Mrs. Disbennet and Mrs. Warner showed them the math games we play to reinforce basic math skills.  Mr. Gang and Mrs. Bigham showcased Leaptrack, which helps with reading skills. We also discussed our homework goals with Mrs. Tracey. Finally, we enjoyed a lovely dinner together served by Mrs. Murdock and Miss Smith.  A big thanks to all our families for their support for the afterschool program.

Tallmadge Community Learning Center

We continue to grow here at TCLC.  With our enrollment now at 41 students, we are really in the swing of things.  Hopefully, we will be adding new students in the coming weeks.  The Tallmadge teachers have sent out interim reports and have given us a list of 37 students whom we will be sending information home with this week.

This past Friday, we had our first Zumba class.  Zumba is a Latin-based dance aerobics.  Maria Mulder, the Zumba instructor, did a great job with the kids, who had a wonderful time.

Next week, we are looking forward to adding art to our rotation.  We will be doing landscapes with all of the students all next week.  We believe that art is part of a well-rounded education and are looking forward to seeing what the students create.
