Our mission to is provide programs and services that enrich the educational, social, and cultural opportunities of students in our community

General Sherman Community Learning Center

Thomas Ewing Community Learning Center

Things are well underway at the General Sherman and Thomas Ewing Community Learning Centers.  The Sherman students are preparing a tone chime piece to perform in conjunction with Lights on After School.  An open house for Sherman will be held on October 21 for parents and WASC board members to observe typical activities at the after school site.  Students at Ewing were busy tie-dying t-shirts for the first week activity. The Math IXL computer program is being implemented to enhance the math skills of the junior high students.  The program coordinates with the school’s math course of study and pacing guide.  Site director Nan Rowe and Family and Student Coordinator Ashly Draper will be traveling to observe the junior high program in Circleville for staff development.

West After School Center

Mrs. Violand and her kindergarten students are off and running learning letter/sound concepts and touch math skills. Much of Mrs. Violand’s time is spent reading the children’s individual Baggie Books. Alongside Jane is a volunteer whose name is Allison Gonzalez. Allison is an eighth grade student from General Sherman Jr. High who came highly recommended by her seventh grade teacher. Allison is a wonderful addition to WASC and the children love her. Mrs. Carol Gates and Mrs. Warna Stoughton have also volunteered in Jane’s classroom on a weekly basis, which helps Jane implement math, reading and spelling skills to her first graders. Mrs. Violand was recently complimented by a first grade teacher at West Elementary who has noticed a remarkable difference in one student’s spelling scores. We are excited for the student as well as Mrs. Violand. Hats off to Jane Violand for a job well done.

East Community Learning Center

We had a busy week at ECLC.  We started Math LeapTrack, to assess which level the students were on.  On Thursday, we read “The Snowy Day” to participate in “Read for the Record.”  Thousands of children across the country read the book to help draw awareness for early literacy.  Mrs. Draper came on Friday to finish our art projects.  Students painted landscapes inspired by Bob Ross.  We also made replicas of Christopher Columbus’s ships to celebrate Columbus Day.  Finally, Miss. Fiore taught sign language.  The students learned the alphabet, numbers 0-10, and how to spell their names.

Cedar Heights Community Learning

At the Cedar Community Learning Center last week, we were introduced to a couple new activities.  Zumba instructor Maria Mulder spent Friday afternoon with us and taught us Zumba.  It was great!  We got our heart rates pumping and learned some new dance moves.  Maria will be back at Cedar the first week of November to teach us more dances and improve our cardiovascular health. We also wrote letters to our pen pals at the West After School Center.  We are building our writing skills and learning interesting things about other kids in after school programs in our town.  We look forward to more correspondence with our new pals.

Tallmadge Community Learning Center

We had a busy week at Tallmadge Community Learning Center.  We started a new math assessment with our Leap Track Pads which we already use for reading assessment and remediation.  This should give us more information about how the students are progressing with their math skills and concepts.  The staff also assessed each of the students’ communication skills.  We will do this again two more times throughout the school year to measure progress in that area.

Mr. Dorian visited on Tuesday and played “Flinch” with the students.  This is one of their favorite games and the students got a special treat when Mr. Lawson, Tallmadge principal, stopped by one day to play a game with the students.

Finally, on Fun Friday, Mrs. Warner stopped by with her son and daughter to teach competitive cup stacking.  All of the students really seemed to enjoy the challenge.  They had some relay races and we look forward to Mrs. Warner visiting in the future.
