AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAMMING NEWS

See what we've been doing this week -- after-school, and meet some of the special people that make our programs work!

Cedar Community Learning Center

This week, Mr. Garcia, site director had the opportunity to hang out with 4th grade and capture on video an experiment they were working on with Volcanoes. The experiment involved Mentos candies and Coca Cola bottles. This showed one type of Volcano eruption called Plinian. The students first watched Mrs. Tracey perform the eruption, then each student was given a small bottle of Diet Coca Cola and six Mentos. This was extremely fun to watch. Click HERE to see what we mean. Listen to excited learners - after school!

East Community Learning Center

East CLC students enjoyed creating "Art Week" landscapes!  Mrs. Draper did a great job engaging our 19 first graders!  Thanks to all of the East Community Learning Staff for making her job easier.

Tallmadge Community Learning Center

At the Tallmadge CLC, we had 3 HEROES of the week Taylor, Madison and Kobe. Congratulations to our HEROES! Monday-Thursday at Tallmadge we have been working really hard on Leap Track and Homework. In Math we get to play fun math games like ZAP! All the staff and students at Tallmadge CLC have been working very hard to make this a successful school year for everyone. Click HERE to see our kids hard at work.

West After School Center

The students at the West After School Center spend time everyday on computers. They practice typing their spelling words, which helps them to get ready for the week's test and also helps increase practice time and build comfort and familiarity with the keyboard.

FIRE PREVENTION WEEK

Our A.M. childcare students learned about fire safety this week and were encouraged to hold onto their safety thoughts through out the week. Their teacher, Miss Amie, sprayed a red streak of hair coloring (with parental permission) for those that elected to do so to remind them of fire safety and to engage others discuss and plan safety precautions they can take at home, work, and school when asked.

COMMUNITY NEWS

You can help support the

West After School Center

every time you shop at your local Krogers.  It's simple.  Just sign up and every time you shop and have your Krogers Plus Card scanned, a portion of the amount comes to the West After School Center. Encourage your friends to help us - and support our mission!

TO USE THE KROGER COMMUNITY REWARDS PROGRAM:

  1. Pick up a copy of the registration form from the WASC. It has the scanbar code on it.

  2. Simply take the form to the Customer Service Desk at your local Kroger store. They will scan it and your Kroger Plus Card, and with 72 hours a percentage of everything purchased at Krogers comes to the WASC - between now and April 30, 2010.

Know someone that recently lost a job? There may be forms of assistance of which they may be unaware.

The West After School Center is a provider for the Ohio Benefit Bank. If you are in need of assistance related to childcare, food, health coverage or home energy needs, please call the WASC at 653-5678 and set up an appointment to do a quick check to see if you might qualify for help.

Preventing the Flu: Good Health Habits Can Help Stop Germs

Whether we choose to believe it or not, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) predicts that our country and others in the northern hemisphere will experience an outbreak, possibly a pandemic, of the H1N1 Flu as the weather turns colder in the coming weeks and months. Preparation is important to effectively deal with what might transpire. We can minimize the effects of the flu and its spread by following some good health habits.

  1. Avoid close contact. Avoid close contact with people who are sick. When you are sick, keep your distance from others to protect them from getting sick too. Stay home when you are sick.

  2. Stay home from work, afterschool, childcare, school, and errands when you are sick, except to seek medical care.  Keep sick children at home except to see medical care. You will help prevent others from catching the illness. Cover your mouth and nose.

  3. Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it. Learn to "sneeze in your sleeve."

  4. Wash your hands often. Washing your hands and the hands of your children often will help protect you from germs.

  5. Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs are often spread when a person touches something that is contaminated with germs and then touches his or her eyes, nose, or mouth.

  6. Practice other good health habits. Get plenty of sleep, be physically active, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritious food.

If people are ill, they should stay at home and limit contact with others, except to seek medical care. Healthy residents living in impacted areas should take the everyday preventive actions listed above.People who develop an illness with fever and respiratory symptoms, such as cough and runny nose, and possibly other symptoms, such as body aches, nausea, or vomiting or diarrhea, should contact their health care provider. Their health care provider will determine whether influenza testing is needed.

Studies have shown that the influenza virus can survive on surfaces -- and infect a person -- for up to eight hours. Individuals infected with seasonal and H1N1 flu shed the virus and may be able to infect others from 1-7 days afterwards before getting sick themselves. The period can be longer in some people, especially children and people with weakened immune systems and in people infected with the H1N1 virus.  (from Ohio University News and Information)

It's happening on October 20. The Ohio Association of Elementary School Administrators and the Ohio Afterschool Network are partnering with the Ohio Department of Education to sponsor Aligning the Learning Day: Collaboration Strategies for Principal and After-school Program Directors. The training module was developed by the National Association of Elementary School Principals with support form the C.S. Mott Foundation. This training is intended to equip team partners to lead the important conversation and share best practices related to principal-afterschool collaboration in Ohio. An alignment of the time children spend learning in school and after-school programs will lead to improved planning, communication, sharing of resources, and increased amounts of learning time that create higher levels of achievement for children in our state.

FITNESS, NUTRITION and HEALTHY LIVING for KIDS

Watch  Healthy Living for Kids weekly on the Lancaster Schools Television Network

The Goals for our Television Program:

  1. Create and sustain a community dialogue and awareness campaign that helps every individual learn to make healthy choices about what and how much they eat as well as how much daily exercise they get.

  2. Encourage children to engage in healthy and productive extra curricular activities at home and at school.

  3. Teach families how to prepare foods and economical family meals and snacks.

  4. Showcase the wealth of community resources and personnel that can help kids and families develop healthy lifestyles.

  5. Demonstrate the positive impact and benefits that participation in before and after school programs can have on children's mental health and social development.

SMART ART is featured in many of our shows. The arts play a powerful role in the development of healthy kid and often become the "hook" that interests kids in all kinds of learning. Click HERE to see what the kids at the Cedar CLC are learning and creating.
