 Your home should be a safe haven. But do you regularly check fit or home fire hazards? If not, there is the potential for danger. Fire departments responded to nearly 400,000 home fires in 2006. That’s why the theme of Fire Prevention Week 2008 is “It’s Fire Prevention Week: Prevent Home Fires!

The students, staff, and volunteers of the West After School Center and programs at Cedar Heights and Tallmadge schools participate in monthly emergency drills.

Are you prepared? Do you have a plan?  Do your children know it?

Now is the time to prepare!  There is still time remaining this week to prepare and practice your home drill.

MEAL PROGRAMS at the WASC

Busy parents can take advantage of the availability of supper at the WASC, Cedar Heights, and Tallmadge, Monday-Friday, throughout the year.  The snacks we serve are free, and the supper program (5:30-6:00 pm) is open to any child in our programs or others that would sign up for supper, based on qualification requirements similar to the school lunch program. The WASC is a sponsor of afterschool meals for the centers serving children at East, West, Cedar Heights, and Tallmadge.

Cedar Community Learning Center

The Cedar CLC is implementing a new Math online program called Aleks. ALEKS is a web-based, artificially intelligent assessment and learning system. ALEKS uses adaptive questioning to quickly and accurately determine exactly what a student knows and doesn't know in a course. ALEKS then instructs the student on the topics he/she is most ready to learn. As a student works through a course, ALEKS periodically reassesses the student to ensure that topics learned are also retained. ALEKS courses are very complete in their topic coverage and ALEKS avoids multiple choice questions. A student who shows a high level of mastery of an ALEKS course will be successful in the actual course he/she is taking.

The ALEKS program will be used in the After School Program as part of a rotation. In addition, the students can access the program from home and strive to improve their skills in and out of the school. We are excited to start soon and have this addition to the program and better serve the students.
 

Tallmadge Community Learning Center

The Tallmadge Community Learning Center opened on Monday, September 29th with 19 students and continues to grow each day. The students and staff are getting to know each other as well as the daily routine. We are off to a great start!

 
 

West After School Center

Students from West School attending the WASC have been learning how to play together as well as getting fit -- all part of the recreation component and goal of our afterschool  program! The students have been jumping rope, tossing the football, playing four square and have even made up their own version of handball four square. They are playing together with all ages and learning about cooperation and sharing - and having a great time.

Our Goals:

1.  Create and sustain a community dialogue and awareness campaign that helps every individual learn to make healthy choices about what and how much they eat as well as how much daily exercise they get. 

2.  Encourage children to engage in healthy and productive extra curricular activities at home and at school.

3.  Teach families how to prepare meals and economical family meals and snacks.

4.  Showcase the wealth of community resources and personnel that can help kids and families develop healthy lifestyles.
