Students at ECLC learned about African masks last week and used paper mache to create their own masks. Mrs. Draper came on Friday to help us finish our projects. Mrs. Winters also came by on Friday to review what we had learned with her in youth development.

Congratulations to Ethan Disbennet for being our first student "On Target" in Leap Track. Ethan completed an assessment and eight cards in just three weeks. Way to go, Ethan!

                  Cedar Heights Community Learning

Last week at Cedar Heights, we had a special science presentation from Mr. Huston and Mr. Hajost.  They taught us about lenses and prisms, and how they change things we see when looking through them. We also got to look through a microscope with slides of plant cells.  In addition, Mr. Huston brought in a periscope for us to examine and experiment with.  Miss Maria was here as well to teach us some more Zumba moves; she also brought her pink parachute.

We had a full, five-day week last week for the first time in a while.  With the Fairfield County Fair and the Central Ohio Education Association day, we have had three days off in the past two weeks.  Thus, it was good to get back to the five-day routine; we packed all of the days with plenty of activities.

In addition to our regular reading, math, and homework rotations on Wednesday, we had a family game night.  Family members stopped by to play Rebound, Connect Four, the Memory Game, and Hangman among others.  We had a nice turnout and everyone seemed to have a good time.  Thanks to all of the family members who participated.

We also had Mr. Dorian at Tallmadge for a couple of days.  On Thursday, he had the students playing a variety of reaction games with soda-can-size foam pieces.  Then, on Friday, he brought the large parachute and the students had a blast.  It is amazing how many different games can be played with this one apparatus.  Thanks to Mr. Dorian for coming to visit.

With the recent Fire Prevention Week, Mrs. Violand discussed fire safety with her students. The students read several books on this subject and practiced a fire drill wearing a fireman’s helmet that they created as an art project at WASC.   The last part of their lesson was focused on a readiness plan for the home.  Talking about the importance of smoke alarms and a safe place to meet in case of a fire was top priority.  We were then ready for a visit from our local fire department on the 18th of October

Thomas Ewing Community Learning Center

Thomas Ewing was the host on October 20 for a tailgate party in support of the nationwide initiative, “Lights On After School.” This event was designed to celebrate the achievements of afterschool students and draw attention to the need for more afterschool programs to serve the millions of children nationwide who are unsupervised and at risk each weekday afternoon. This family night event featured the students preparing a chili and hot dog supper for their families, friends, and West After School Center Board members.  The evening began in the library with a partial reading of the proclamation from Gov. Kasish in support of afterschool programs.  The students were then divided into three groups, along with the invited guests, to play cornhole, the dice game, and bingo.  At the conclusion of game time, chili, hot dogs, and brownies were served.  Prior to the event, the students had a good time browning the meat, opening cans for the soup, and making the brownies.  It was also fun to use math to convert a recipe for five into a recipe for 100!  We were especially thankful to McDonalds and Mrs. Duey for the orange drink.  Overall, it was a good time and we hope to have many more family events as successful as this one.

Youth Development

At General Sherman Community Learning Center, we are continuing our focus on filling one another’s buckets. Junior high students are learning about the importance of being considerate, helpful, and responsible. These types of actions are bucketfilling behaviors. Just like the elementary schools, junior high students focus on avoiding bucketdipping behaviors such as cheating, gossiping, and being irresponsible. However, given that students at the junior highs are older, we also focus on “using your lid.” We’ve been working on stopping ourselves before we say or do anything that may be hurtful to someone else. Additionally, while the sixth graders decorated buckets to use in our bucketfilling tracking, the seventh graders have been journaling their bucketfilling actions.
