General Sherman Community Learning Center

Thomas Ewing Community Learning Center

An integral part of the Thomas Ewing and General Sherman After School programs is the use of Progress Book.  Progress Book is an ongoing parent/student/teacher communication that is essential to a successful educational process. Students in the program are asked to check their Progress Book several times a week.  Progress Book’s Parent Access Web Site has tremendously improved this communication process, enabling both parents and teachers to hold students more accountable. This system provides parents and students with 24/7 access to classroom information and progress reports.

Some of the benefits are as follows:

• there is an overall view of student averages, assignment details, homework, participation, teacher messages, attendance, teacher web pages, and more;
• parents can observe their children’s entire progress from a single login site; and
• students can have separate login accounts from parents to monitor their own progress.  

West After School Center

Once again, families at the West Afterschool Center will receive free bread, muffins, bagels, and buns because of the thoughtfulness of Molly Colyer at Lutheran Social Services.  Molly contacted Mid-Ohio Foodbank on our behalf and told them of our need at WASC. Mid-Ohio agreed to send enough bread to supply all of the Learning Centers with fresh products on a weekly basis. Our thanks again to Molly and Mid-Ohio Foodbank!

East Community Learning Center

Mr. Dorion stopped by on Monday to play ” Minute to Win It” games.  Students played “Back Flip,” a game in which pencils are placed on the back of the student’s hand and flipped into the air; students caught up to 10 pencils in a minute.   On Friday, we enjoyed the fall weather by paying outside.  We also played board games, and Mrs. Warner came back to cup stack with us! Cup stacking is one of the students’ favorite Fun Friday activities of the students.

Cedar Heights Community Learning

We had two guests last week at the Cedar Heights Community Learning Center.  Mrs. Cash, a counselor with New Horizons, visited us every day last week.  We read some stories about emotions and then had discussions about the stories.  We also used drawing as a medium for sharing what it was that  we gleaned from the stories Mrs. Cash shared with us.  Mr. Dorion, a Lancaster City School gym teacher, visited us on Wednesday.  Mr. Dorion taught us the game "A Minute to Win It." Everyone had a chance to compete in the different challenges. We had a good time with the games and worked on our hand/eye coordination at the same time.  Thank you to our guests last week and we look forward to their next visit.
     The academic coaches in the afterschool program were busy filling out progress reports for all the students in the program.  Those reports are being sent home this week with the persons who pick up the students. So be on the lookout, parents!

Tallmadge Community Learning Center

With another four-day week, it seems as if we haven’t had many full weeks.  It is hard to believe that we only have 20 more non-Fun Friday, instructional days between now and January 3^rd, 2011.  With the limited time, we have much work to complete.   

During the next two weeks, parent/teacher conference will be conducted and the students will be receiving their grade cards.  As a staff, we will be looking at all of our students’ grade cards to see if there are specific areas that we need to improve upon, as well as to celebrate our students who  are achieving well.

Last week culminated with a Fun Thursday.  The students had been working every day on an art project developed by Ashley Draper, based on the work of Georges Seurat.  Seurat was an artist who pioneered the technique of pointillism. We were very impressed with how the paintings looked when finished.
