Cedar Community Learning Center

This week at Cedar CLC, students had the opportunity to learn about trained pigeons. The birds for the demonstration came from Sherry Tracey, Cedar Hts. 4th Grade Teacher & Cedar CLC Academic Coach. Mrs. Tracey's husband has been training birds, in particular pigeons, to fly away as far as 660 miles away from home and return. The students were able to touch the birds and ask questions before the birds flew away. In order to prove that the birds return home, one of the students wrote a note on a small piece of paper and attached it to one of the birds and could not let Mrs. Tracey see it. The students received the note on Wednesday of this week from Mrs. Tracey, proving that they did return home.

Tallmadge Community Learning Center

On October 28th, the Tallmadge Community Learning Center held an Open House for enrolled students and families. Over 80 people attended the event which included supper, information session, and a mini-rotation of the students' daily schedules. Families learned about Leap Track, Flash Masters, and the homework portion of the program. Everyone enjoyed the evening!

West After School Center

Every month at the West After School Center, we have a guessing game. This month’s item was a jar half filled with candy corn. The winners were Morgan Simmons and Kaylee Allen (not pictured). They both guessed 300 pieces. The correct number was 353. Congratulations to them both!

MEAL PROGRAMS at the WASC

Busy parents can take advantage of the availability of supper at the WASC, Cedar Heights, and Tallmadge, Monday-Friday, throughout the year.  The snacks we serve are free, and the supper program (5:30-6:00 pm) is open to any child in our programs or others that would sign up for supper, based on qualification requirements similar to the school lunch program. The WASC is a sponsor of afterschool meals for the centers serving children at East, West, Cedar Heights, and Tallmadge.

Watch  Healthy Living for Kids weekly on the LSN.

Our Goals:

1.  Create and sustain a community dialogue and awareness campaign that helps every individual learn to make healthy choices about what and how much they eat as well as how much daily exercise they get.

2.  Encourage children to engage in healthy and productive extra curricular activities at home and at school.

3.  Teach families how to prepare meals and economical family meals and snacks.

4.  Showcase the wealth of community resources and personnel that can help kids and families develop healthy lifestyles.

5.  Demonstrate the positive impact and benefits that participation in before and after school programs can have on children's mental health and social development.
