President Obama's Budget Proposes to Flat Line Funding for 21st CCLC Programs

Yesterday,  President Obama released his budget, and it proposes flat funding for 21st Century Community Learning Centers (21st CCLC). With families and programs struggling, we need to make sure President Obama hears a loud and clear message from the afterschool community expressing our dissatisfaction with the budget and urging him to follow through on his campaign promise of doubling funding for 21st CCLC in future budgets. Click this link to email or call (202-456-1414) President Obama TODAY to express your disappointment. It is important he hear loudly and clearly that afterschool is a critical investment for our kids and families, especially during these tough economic times. Increasing 21st CCLC funding would have ensured that thousands more kids had a safe, enriching place to be in the afterschool hours, inspiring them to succeed and providing working parents with much needed peace of mind.  Please, take time to call or email right now!

Art has been a popular and important programming component of the West After School Center programs this school year.

Thank you, Ashly Draper, for your wonderful lessons and artistic creations.

Just like kids need to have good nutrition on a daily basis, they also develop healthy habits from their daily serving of the arts. The arts are much more than just fun "extra" activities for kids. Studies have shown the far-reaching benefits of an arts education. The arts:

  • improve kids' overall academic performance.

  • show that kids actively engaged in arts education are likely to have higher test scores than those with little to no involvement.

  • develop skills needed by the 21st century workforce: critical thinking, creative problem solving, effective communication, teamwork and more.

  • teach kids to be more tolerant and open.

  • allow kids to express themselves creatively and bolster their self-confidence.

  • keep students engaged in school and less likely to drop out.

GOOD NEWS!

WEST AFTER SCHOOL CENTER IS AWARDED THE

FEED OHIO SUMMER LUNCH PROGRAM GRANT for 2009

The West After School Center has been awarded a grant to further expand the Summer Lunch Program for the children  of Lancaster and the surrounding area this summer, beginning June 4. This competitive grant is awarded by the Governor's Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives (GOFBCI). Last year, the WASC served over 20,000 lunches during the summer months, and we hope to increase participation and meet the needs of our children in families in THREE additional serving sites this summer in Lancaster east-side neighborhoods.

The economic downturn has challenged many families' ability to adequately feed their children. Help us spread the word that a free lunch is available Monday-Friday in nine locations this summer.

Let's work to feed our kids - and have fun together doing it!

Look Inside the After School Programs in Lancaster This Week

Cedar Community Learning Center

This week is Teacher Appreciation Week and in celebration of the event, all the staff at Cedar Heights including the after-school staff were given flowers and gas cards. But what we want people and parents and the community to see and appreciate is the interaction that takes place daily between teachers and students. Mrs. Tracey, a member of our 4th grade after-school staff and Jolyn Disbbennet  are showing a prime example of the impact teachers have on every student's life. Thank you everyone at Cedar Heights Elementary and Cedar CLC for all the hard work and once again congrats to Cedar Heights on the OAESA Hall of Fame Award.

Eastside Center for Success

The Eastside Center for Success continues to work cooperatively with the staff of Art and Clay on Main to provide elective after-school art enrichment for students attending the public elementary schools of Lancaster.

Tallmadge Community Learning Center

Students at the Tallmadge Community Learning Center spent a recent Fun Friday creating gifts for their mothers, grandmothers, or special friends. All students continue to work on their reading skills each day through the Leap Track program.

Click HERE to see the WASC Cinco de Mayo celebration

Cinco de Mayo was celebrated at WASC with a cooking lesson by Ann Purcell. She taught the students how to make  sopaipillas and tortillas using her family recipe. The students also made maracas and wind socks to decorate their homes. The history of Cinco de Mayo was discussed and the students shared their art work.

Our Goals:

1.  Create and sustain a community dialogue and awareness campaign that helps every individual learn to make healthy choices about what and how much they eat as well as how much daily exercise they get.

2.  Encourage children to engage in healthy and productive extra curricular activities at home and at school.

3.  Teach families how to prepare meals and economical family meals and snacks.

4.  Showcase the wealth of community resources and personnel that can help kids and families develop healthy lifestyles.

5.  Demonstrate the positive impact and benefits that participation in before and after school programs can have on children's mental health and social development.

WE CAN! (Ways to Enhance Children's Activity and Nutrition) has produced a sixty-second animated presentation that supports our mission with Healthy Living for Kids. Click HERE to watch.
