Dealing with
Swine-Origin Influenza A (H1N1)
FACT or FICTION??
Information for Child Care Providers
(via Center for Disease Control)
In
response to an intensifying outbreak in
the United States and internationally
caused by a new influenza virus of swine
origin, the World Health Organization
raised the worldwide pandemic alert
level to
Phase 5 on April 29, 2009. A Phase 5
alert is a “strong signal that a
pandemic is imminent and that the time
to finalize the organization,
communication, and implementation of the
planned mitigation measures is short.”
The United States Government has
declared a public health emergency in
the United States. The Center for
Disease Control’s (CDC) response goals
are to reduce transmission and illness
severity, and provide information to
help health care providers, public
health officials and the public in
general address the challenges posed by
this emergency.
At the
West After School Center, what are we
doing now, and what will we do in the
event of a local emergency in Lancaster?
We are learning as much of what is
factual as we can, dispelling what is
obviously rumor, focusing on routine
cleaning of "high traffic" areas,
planning, and considering what is best
for our students, staff, and
stakeholders. As the days go forward, these
actions are recommended to help all of
us avoid the virus.
Avoid
close contact.
Avoid close contact
with people who are sick. When you are
sick, keep your distance from others to
protect them from getting sick too.
Stay home when you are sick.
If possible, stay home from work,
school, and errands when you are sick.
You will help prevent others from
catching your illness.
Cover your mouth and nose.
Cover your mouth and nose with a
tissue when coughing or sneezing. It may
prevent those around you from getting
sick.
Clean your hands.
Washing your hands often will help
protect you from germs.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose or
mouth.
Germs are often spread when a person
touches something that is contaminated
with germs and then touches his or her
eyes, nose, or mouth.
Practice other good health habits.
Get plenty of sleep, be physically
active, manage your stress, drink plenty
of fluids, and eat nutritious food.
The
bottom line is that we all have much to
learn about this new flu virus. If you or
your child experience any of these
symptoms of the influenza,
(fever,
cough, sore throat, body aches,
headache, chills, fatigue, and, in some
cases diarrhea)
visit your doctor. A physician will
determine when adults or children can
return to work or school. Adults or
children should not report to the West
After School Center or satellite
programs with any of these symptoms.
Should we need to adopt more stringent
exclusion policies, we will follow the
recommendations of the Fairfield
Department of Health, ODJFS licensing,
and/or other regulatory agencies.

GOOD NEWS! |
WEST AFTER
SCHOOL CENTER IS AWARDED THE
FEED OHIO SUMMER
LUNCH PROGRAM GRANT for 2009
The West After
School Center has been awarded a grant to further expand the Summer
Lunch Program for the children of Lancaster and the surrounding
area this summer, beginning June 4. This competitive grant is awarded by
the
Governor's Office of Faith-Based and Community
Initiatives (GOFBCI). Last year, the
WASC served over 20,000 lunches during the summer months, and we hope to
increase participation and meet the needs of our children in families in
FOUR additional serving sites this summer in Lancaster east-side
neighborhoods.
The economic downturn has
challenged many families' ability to adequately feed their children.
Help us spread the word that a free lunch is available Monday-Friday in
nine locations this summer.
Let's work to feed our
kids - and have fun together doing it! |

Lancaster-Area After-School Summit, April 30, 2009
Emulating what we
have experienced by watching the examples of our national and state
level professional associations as they achieve goals by collaborating
and partnering together, Lancaster-area before and after-school
providers gathered for a summit meeting to discuss common challenges,
goals, and obstacles, and plan and discuss details of the 2009 Summer
Lunch Program. We made new contacts, enjoyed a productive meeting, and
plan to meet again in June. |

Tallmadge Community Learning
Center students celebrated Earth
Day with their families on April
22. Connie Smith from OSU
Extension Office in Fairfield
County was the guest presenter.
Earlier in the week, students
painted pots and then on Earth
Day, with some help and guidance
from Connie, they planted chive
plants into their pots. Connie
spoke about how to plant and
take care of the chives as well
as how to use them in everyday
cooking. The event was complete
with baked potatoes, sour cream
and chives!

Our Goals:
1. Create and sustain a community dialogue
and awareness campaign that helps every individual learn to make healthy
choices about what and how much they eat as well as how much daily
exercise they get.
2. Encourage children to engage in healthy
and productive extra curricular activities at home and at school.
3. Teach families how to prepare meals and
economical family meals and snacks.
4. Showcase the wealth of community
resources and personnel that can help kids and families develop healthy
lifestyles.
5. Demonstrate the positive impact and
benefits that participation in before and after school programs can have
on children's mental health and social development.

WE CAN! (Ways to Enhance Children's
Activity and Nutrition) has produced a sixty-second animated
presentation that supports our mission with Healthy Living for Kids.
