AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAMMING NEWS

See what we've been doing this week -- after-school, and meet some of the special people that make our programs work!

Cedar Community Learning Center

This week, we had the privilege to have Gary Sheldon, conductor from the Lancaster Festival, come and introduce a young Slovakian guitarist, Mak Grgic. Mak will be appearing with the Chamber Orchestra during the Festival this summer as well as doing an up-close and personal workshop for older elementary-aged students. The students were very attentive to Mak and really enjoyed the sounds from his classical guitar.

East Community Learning Center

The Olympics took place at the East Community Learning Center during the month of February!  On Feb. 12, 2010, ECLC held their own opening ceremonies. Each student made his or her own Olympic torch, colored flags of the countries, and used a world map to display them.  The following weeks were dedicated to practicing for the final Olympic challenges of the Math Biathalon, Spelling Half Pipe, Crocheting Bobsled, Leap Track Slalom, and Jump Rope Triathalon.  The math course practiced math facts and ended with the final challenges of speed and accuracy.  Reading results were determined by the number of cards completed during the Olympics.   During spelling, students practiced the Dolch list words and played around the world; the final challenge was a speed test of matching Dolch words.  The Crocheting Bobsled Event involved learning and making the most crochet chains.  The most important event was the Manners Challenge.  The top three students were awarded medals for their use of manners.  A ceremony was held to close the Olympics and to award medals.  The evening concluded with the singing of the "Star Spangled Banner."

Tallmadge Community Learning Center

Hard work is the order of the day at the Tallmadge CLC.  We are getting a lot accomplished in our short time together.  In math, we are playing games with cards and dice to help us with our basic math skills.  Our Big Brothers and Big Sisters play with us as well.  We really enjoy the time we have with them.

Dinner is a nice time to relax and talk about our day with each other.

West After School Center

We really made the most of our first full week in February at WASC.  On Thursday, we had a family game night from 6:00-7:30.  A total of six families came to enjoy cookies, punch, and gametime.  Staff members played games with the families as well as talked to them about questions or concerns they might have.  Everyone had a great time and can’t wait until the next family night!

Mr. E taught his first Spanish lesson on Friday.  The students learned how to sing “Happy Birthday” in Spanish and sang it to Mrs. Kuttler at the end of the day.

We also had guest speaker Andrea Haslage from Slate Run Metro Parks come and talk to us about pollution.  Andrea talked to the students about different types of litter and pollution and had a fun activity to show the kids how pollution looks firsthand.

March is National Nutrition Month

It’s common knowledge that a healthful diet is an important part of a healthful lifestyle, but most people have trouble figuring out what to do when planning a complete diet overhaul. During National Nutrition Month®, the American Dietetic Association reminds everyone that an easy way to focus on eating better is to start with the basics: build your nutritional health from the ground up. “By starting slowly and giving yourself a good foundation, you can work towards a healthier life,” says registered dietitian and ADA spokesperson Toby Smithson. “Change doesn’t have to be dramatic to make a difference.”

Five ways to improve your nutrition from the ground up.

             1. Focus on fruits and veggies: “Take a good look at your current diet and you’ll probably realize you’re not eating enough fruits or vegetables,” says Smithson. “Add a serving each day to one meal and increase it every few weeks. Adding more of these foods into your diet is important whether you buy frozen, fresh or organic.”

             2. Look locally: From farmer’s markets to community-supported agriculture, you have many options to find new, fresh foods in your area. “This can be a great way to eat well and support your community at the same time,” Smithson says.

             3. Make calories count: “Too often, people think of foods as good or bad and that only those on the ‘good foods’ list are okay to eat,” says Smithson. “When you’re choosing between options, focus instead on the one with more of the vitamins and nutrients that you need. Sometimes, foods with fewer calories aren’t always the healthiest options.” To figure out how many calories you need to achieve a healthy weight, visit www.mypyramid.gov.

             4. Test your taste buds: A healthy eating plan emphasizes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low-fat or fat-free dairy and includes lean meats, poultry, fish, beans and nuts. “Those are the basics, but within this wide range there are always opportunities to try new things and find new favorites,” Smithson says. “Expand your horizons. Try a fish you’ve never eaten before or find a new vegetable recipe. By testing yourself, you might find new healthy favorites to add to your regular grocery list.”

             5. Trick yourself with treats: “A healthful diet doesn’t mean deprivation,” says Smithson. “If you have a sweet tooth, have fruit and yogurt for dessert. If you want a snack in the afternoon, have some trail mix or nuts. There is no reason to go hungry just because you’re making healthful changes.”

Celebrating National Nutrition Month at WASC

To kick off National Nutrition Month, Mrs. Curtice had her students write letters to Mrs. Obama thanking her for drawing attention to childhood obesity.  The students wrote letters, cut out pictures of healthy food, and drew examples of healthy food to send to Mrs. Obama.  We all learned a lot about making healthy choices and finding healthy foods.

The Goals for our Television Program:

  1. Create and sustain a community dialogue and awareness campaign that helps every individual learn to make healthy choices about what and how much they eat as well as how much daily exercise they get.

  2. Encourage children to engage in healthy and productive extra curricular activities at home and at school.

  3. Teach families how to prepare foods and economical family meals and snacks.

  4. Showcase the wealth of community resources and personnel that can help kids and families develop healthy lifestyles.

  5. Demonstrate the positive impact and benefits that participation in before and after school programs can have on children's mental health and social development.
