GOOD NEWS!

WEST AFTER SCHOOL CENTER IS AWARDED THE

FEED OHIO SUMMER LUNCH PROGRAM GRANT for 2009

The West After School Center has been awarded a grant to further expand the Summer Lunch Program for the children  of Lancaster and the surrounding area this summer, beginning June 4. This competitive grant is awarded by the Governor's Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives (GOFBCI). Last year, the WASC served over 20,000 lunches during the summer months, and we hope to increase participation and meet the needs of our children in families in three additional serving sites this summer in Lancaster east-side neighborhoods.

The economic downturn has challenged many families' ability to adequately feed their children. Help us spread the word that a free lunch is available Monday-Friday in nine locations this summer.

Let's work to feed our kids - and have fun together doing it!

When times are tough, music can touch the soul. Let's keep music programs strong in all our schools and encourage our students' participation in all the arts.

Mr. Len Hajost

WASC Emeritus Board Member

During the March 19 meeting, the West After School Center recognized one of its founding members, Len Hajost, with Emeritus Member status. Mr. Hajost has been one of the driving, visionary forces in helping the West After School Center develop a clear vision and mission and expand services to sites throughout Lancaster. Len served as the WASC Board president for several years and helped guide the board to conceptualize a business model for program development. Congratulations, Len - and THANK YOU for many years of service.

Look Inside the After School Programs in Lancaster This Week

Cedar Community Learning Center

This week at Cedar CLC has taken on the project of dressing up some bare walls in the school. Ashly Draper, the Cedar CLC Art Academic Coach, is working with us to beautify two walls inside Cedar Heights with art creations from the after-school students. The art work will be placed in sturdy frames that will allow interchanges for future art work, postings, etc. This is just one more small idea to help build up students' esteem and make the building look attractive in the process. This completed project will also positively add and contribute toward Cedar Heights' efforts to be recognized as a Hall of Fame School by the Ohio Association of Elementary School Administrators (OAESA) this spring.

Eastside Center for Success

Eastside Center students have been planting and examining seeds. Today they are dissecting seeds and examining seed parts. We can’t wait for Friday-the first day of Spring!! Yes!

Eastside Center for Success is using Market Day in an effort to cover part of our expenses at the center. Market Day has delicious frozen food entrees that can be ordered through the center and are delivered monthly. Many items are individually frozen to help you plan your meals efficiently. Many other items are designed for the family. This month, ECFS is trying to reach a goal of selling 249 delicious desserts. You can't go wrong with any order of Market Day food! You will receive a call the day before the pickup. When you arrive your order will be packed and ready for you. Call 687-7197 to receive an order form that lists all the products available or go to www.marketday.com to place your order. Please indicate Eastside Center for Success as your pickup point. We are located at East Elementary School.

Tallmadge Community Learning Center

On Friday, March 13th, Dr. James DePietro visited the Tallmadge Community Learning Center. Dr. DePietro shared information with the students on three topics, a healthy diet, safe use of backpacks, and the importance of wearing a helmet when bike riding. Following his presentation the students and staff tested their knowledge by playing a nutrition game. The Mustangs won!

.

Tylor Shaffer, a student at the West After School Center, is working on his entry for the 2009 Lights On Afterschool poster competition. The Afterschool Alliance is seeking art that will be used for the 2009 event. The winner's idea will be published in poster form and sent to afterschool programs across the United States to advertise their Lights On Afterschool celebrations. Good Luck, Tylor!

MEAL PROGRAMS at the WASC

Busy parents can take advantage of the availability of supper at the WASC, Cedar Heights, and Tallmadge, Monday-Friday, throughout the year.  The snacks we serve are free, and the supper program (5:30-6:00 pm) is open to any child in our programs or others that would sign up for supper, based on qualification requirements similar to the school lunch program. The WASC is the sponsor of the snacks and meal programs for the after school programs serving children at East, West, Cedar Heights, and Tallmadge.
