AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAMMING NEWS

See what we've been doing this week -- after-school, and meet some of the special people that make our programs work!

Cedar Community Learning Center

Ronald McDonald visited the students at Cedar CLC last Friday. Ronald presented “Going Active with Ronald McDonald.” He showed the students how to stay in shape while having fun doing various activities. The students were able to help Ronald demonstrate how to do many of the activities. We would like to thank Ronald McDonald for coming to our neighborhood.

East Community Learning Center

As spring testing approaches, the students at the East Community Learning Center are picking up the pace to adequately prepare.  Math Leap Track has been added to the curriculum to help review skills that are needed for the Ohio Achievement Test in April.  In addition, the students in grades 3, 4, and 5 receive a problem of the day prepared in the same form the students will see on the test. We anticipate that the students will feel more confident when testing day arrives.

To break away from the daily grind of homework and testing, Fun Fridays provide some relief and relaxation. East students were caught doing the limbo at a beach party last week, finishing butterfly projects, and crocheting.

Tallmadge Community Learning Center

Last week at Tallmadge, whittler Patsy Artrip visited and entertained us with her whittling knowledge.  She shared her tools for whittling wood, and suggested other whittling options like wax and soap.  She has created several amazing pieces of art including Santas, cats, snowmen, angels and pumpkins. Celine Montgomery whittled a bar of soap on her own.

West After School Center

Students at WASC enjoyed a visit from Ms. Kathy Wagner last week.  Kathy is a dental hygienist and spoke with the children about the importance of keeping your teeth healthy.  She shared her cleaning instruments and showed the children how to brush their teeth properly.  She also gave each student their own toothbrush!  We are now finishing up an experiment Kathy left us with to see what vinegar does to eggs when they are treated with fluoride and when they are not.  We can’t wait to see the results!

Ideas for Helping Kids Develop a Taste for Healthy Food

Children learn their habits, attitudes and beliefs from their parents and other caregivers, and that includes their willingness to try new and healthy foods. For
National Nutrition Month®, the American Dietetic Association encourages adults to be good role models and teach your children how to appreciate nutrition and enjoy healthful eating.

"The most important thing you can do is offer your children as many new foods as possible, as early in life as possible," says registered dietitian and ADA Spokesperson Sarah Krieger. "It takes much longer to accept new foods when you are older.

"It's amazing what kids will try," Krieger says. "Hummus, beans, tropical fruits – whatever is available locally in your area, you can get your kids to enjoy it.

"Involve your children in grocery shopping and meal preparation as much as possible," Krieger says. "Kids are more likely to try new things – especially fruits, vegetables, grains and dairy products – if they are involved in choosing and preparing them."

A survey by the American Dietetic Association Foundation showed parents have more potential to influence their children's behavior, including their eating habits, than anyone else. In fact, parents outrank sports celebrities as the person the child "would like to be most," according to the survey. By eating healthy foods and offering them to your children, you can give your kids opportunities to learn to like a variety of nutritious foods.

Kids can develop a liking for new dishes by researching recipe ideas. "Encourage them to go through cookbooks, or look online. There are Web sites that have hundreds of thousands of recipes you can search, and it makes meal preparation more real for children if they can find recipes themselves," Krieger says.

One final piece of advice for parents, Krieger says: "Offer healthy foods and eat them yourself, rather than lecture your children. Just do it, put a smile on your face and your kids will follow."

Celebrating National Nutrition Month at WASC

Students started to make healthy food collages.  They were given magazines to cut out healthy food pictures as well as other healthy choices.  Students were quick to point out the healthy food and talked about how they shouldn’t eat unhealthy food very often.

Watch  Healthy Living for Kids weekly on the Lancaster Schools Television Network

The Goals for our Television Program:

  1. Create and sustain a community dialogue and awareness campaign that helps every individual learn to make healthy choices about what and how much they eat as well as how much daily exercise they get.

  2. Encourage children to engage in healthy and productive extra curricular activities at home and at school.

  3. Teach families how to prepare foods and economical family meals and snacks.

  4. Showcase the wealth of community resources and personnel that can help kids and families develop healthy lifestyles.

  5. Demonstrate the positive impact and benefits that participation in before and after school programs can have on children's mental health and social development.
