TO USE THE KROGER
COMMUNITY REWARDS PROGRAM:

Pick up a copy of the registration form
from the WASC. It has the scanbar code on it.

Simply take the form to the Customer
Service Desk at your local Kroger store. They will scan it and your
Kroger Plus Card, and with 72 hours a percentage of everything
purchased at Krogers comes to the WASC - between now and April 30,
2010.

JOIN
OUR NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH
Over 30 local residents
attended an
informative community meeting held at the WASC last week about forming a neighborhood watch. Tim Huston, WASC
Emeritus Board Member, was the driving force in making this community
service become a reality. An organizational meeting is planned for Tuesday, June 30,
at 7:00 p.m. It will be an organizational meeting during which the WATCH
CAPTAIN, TREASURER and SECRETARY will be elected. The group will
also set up a PHONE TREE at this meeting. There will be some city
officials at this meeting to address concerns.

assistance related to childcare, food, health coverage or home energy
needs, please call the WASC at 653-5678 and set up an appointment to do
a quick check to see if you might qualify for help. |

Our local
Information & Referral of Fairfield County has just received
notice of their designation as a
2-1-1 Call Center!! They have much work to do
switching phone lines to be compatible with
2-1-1, but the bottom line is
hopefully by August, local residents should be able to call
2-1-1 in Fairfield County and
get I&R.

School Supplies Give-a-Way (spread the word) |

Community
Healthfest
Saturday, August 8th, 2009, 9:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.
Fairfield Christian Church/Academy, 1st floor
1965 N. Columbus Street
800 packets of school supplies will be given to children (of school age)
in attendance, while supplies last. This all depends on the grant
approval and price availability.
The purpose of the Community Healthfest is to encourage attendees to
participate in health screenings (all free) at the same time as
receiving supplies, giving them some health feedback for healthy
lifestyle changes. Free screenings should include glucose, cholesterol,
vision, hearing, height and weight, color blind test, blood pressure,
bone density and possibly others. Immunizations will be given (as long
as attendees have their records with them) free of charge, thanks to a
sponsor and Fairfield Department of Health.
There will be some inflatable activities out by the playground to
encourage fun exercise. This too, will be free. There is usually a small
child's craft and face painting. The hope is to have fire trucks and
other exploring opportunities for children available.

500 Book bags filled with basic school supplies will be given away on a
first come, first served basis
Children receiving the book bags need to be present

First United Methodist Church will be
supplying book bags filled with basic school supplies to students at
South Elementary
Charity Newsies will be furnishing supplies
to area schools. Please check with the school office for further
details.

reports no complaints or issues. |

We appreciate the support in
advertising this great opportunity for Lancaster children. Lancaster
City Schools administrator Steve Scott sent an automated phone message
to over 4,000 Lancaster parents this week to help inform them of the
lunch program. United Way of Fairfield County featured information in
their monthly newsletter and many churches have help spread the word in
their weekly bulletins and congregation newsletters. |

Dr. Qiuping Cao,
Associate Professor of Early Childhood Education at Ohio University-
Lancaster, will bring her students from her Parent Education to the WASC
next Thursday afternoon for a tour and opportunity to see and learn
first hand what our the WASC and our community can offer families in the
form of extended learning opportunities - as well as potential job
opportunities for the students. |

Lancaster-Fairfield Community Action Head Start |
Over 200 parents, family
members, friends, and staff, attended the Early Learning Initiative
(ELI) summer program last night at the WASC. We commend the work that
our partners at Lancaster-Fairfield Community Action Head Start are
doing to engage these preschoolers and turn them on to learning. The
results are children prepared for kindergarten. Sadly, this program is
likely on the chopping block across Ohio in the current budget talks
soon to be adopted for the next biennium. |

This is the second summer
that Mary George has worked with the Summer Lunch Program. She is a
graduate of Ohio University and teaches preschool classes at Head Start at the
Utica Center during the school year. She has been active with the
Lancaster High School Band Boosters and the LHS Percussion
Ensemble for many years. She enjoys family, friends, pets, gardening,
and cooking. |

Penny Hollett is a
Lancaster High School graduate and a cook/cashier at Lancaster High
School. She is a 4-H club advisor and enjoys preparations for the
Fairfield County Fair. She also has much experience with cake
decorating. |
