Do you know a student in Lancaster that prefers a private, one-on-one tutor starting this summer?

Dr. June Slobodian, a former teacher, school psychologist, administrator, and recently retired professor of education at Ohio University-Lancaster will help us provide that service at the WASC beginning in June. She brings extensive experience in reading diagnosis. Contact us at 740-653-5678 for further information about fees and contacts.

Coming Soon!  Summer Playground Enrichment Activities at the

West School Playground

Hey kids!  Join Alexis Lape, former West School student, Lancaster HS graduate, and now a scholar-athlete at Miami University on the West School Playground during lunch later this summer and learn how you, too, might learn skills, taught by Alexis, that could help you reach your dreams and become a scholar-athlete in secondary schools and college. Join her for lunch, exercises, tips, and discussions about planning preparing now for success in school and athletics. This opportunity is made possible by a grant from the Children’s Hunger Alliance. Call 653-5678 for dates for this program, or stop by the WASC, enjoy lunch, and learn.

Charity Newsies/ St. Vincent De Paul School Clothes

Application Guidelines

Information and Referral, in partnership with Charity Newsies, will be taking applications for School Clothes Assistance for children in first through twelfth grades beginning

Monday, June 16, 2008.

Applicants can either:

come to 108 W. Main Street, Suite C, between 8 – 4:30 Monday through Friday to pick up an application and a release

or

print out the application and release from the I&R website, www.informationreferral.org

Either way, applicants need to report to the I & R office with the completed application, signed release and the following items:

·        Identification (driver’s license, state ID, etc)

·        Social security cards for all members of the household

·        Income verification (all income, including food stamp printout)

·        Proof of address

The Information and Referral Specialists will review the application and verify the above items.  Charity Newsies will then review the application, determine eligibility and the applicant will be contacted by phone approximately two (2) weeks after they apply with approval or denial. If approved, an appointment will be made at that time for one of the first two Saturdays in August to meet with a Charity Newsies representative to finalize the process. Families will then be instructed to go to Value City to get their voucher and shop. The assistance will be on a first come, first served basis, so encourage families to apply early.

For children in preschool or Kindergarten:

St. Vincent DePaul, 424 Locust Street, will be taking applications for school clothes for preschool and kindergarten June 23 through August 11, 2008.

Applications will be accepted Mon, Tues, Thurs and Fri from 9 – 2.

Applicants need to bring:

·        Identification (driver’s license, state ID, etc.)

·        Social Security Cards for all members of household

·        Income verification

·        Rent receipt

·        Proof of income

·        Printout/letter from preschool/kindergarten they attend

This is essential and St. Vincent’s will refuse to help them without these items.

If you have any questions, you can call Information and Referral at 687-0500.

A study in the recent "Journal of the American Medical Association" gives hope that the battle among U.S. youth with obesity may have leveled off. According to an Associated Press story this week, about 32 percent of children were overweight in 2003-04 and 2005-06 and those levels "held steady after rising without interruption since 1980." Experts attribute the apparent change to schools and parents for emphasizing better eating habits and exercise. Learn what you can so to help teach healthy eating habits and proper serving sizes by following the link to a web site, SMALLSTEP.gov
