COMMUNITY NEWS

JOIN OUR NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH

Over 30 local residents attended an informative community meeting held at the WASC this past Tuesday evening about forming a neighborhood watch. Tim Huston, WASC Emeritus Board Member, was the driving force in making this community service become a reality. A follow-up meeting is planned for Tuesday, June 30, at 7:00 p.m. Help pass the word!! For more information, call Chris Kuttler at 740-653-5678 or Tim Huston at 740-746-8876.

The West After School Center is a provider for the Ohio Benefit Bank. If you are in need of assistance related to childcare, food, health coverage or home energy needs, please call the WASC at 653-5678 and set up an appointment to do a quick check to see if you might qualify for help.

Our local Information & Referral of Fairfield County has just received notice of their designation as a 2-1-1 Call Center!!  They have  much work to do switching phone lines to be compatible with 2-1-1, but the bottom line is hopefully by August, local residents should be able to call 2-1-1 in Fairfield County and get I&R.

School Supplies Give-a-Way (spread the word)

Community Healthfest
Saturday, August 8th, 2009, 9:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.
Fairfield Christian Church/Academy, 1st floor
1965 N. Columbus Street

800 packets of school supplies will be given to children (of school age) in attendance, while supplies last. This all depends on the grant approval and price availability.

The purpose of the Community Healthfest is to encourage attendees to participate in health screenings (all free) at the same time as receiving supplies, giving them some health feedback for healthy lifestyle changes. Free screenings should include glucose, cholesterol, vision, hearing, height and weight, color blind test, blood pressure, bone density and possibly others. Immunizations will be given (as long as attendees have their records with them) free of charge, thanks to a sponsor and Fairfield Department of Health.

There will be some inflatable activities out by the playground to encourage fun exercise. This too, will be free. There is usually a small child's craft and face painting. The hope is to have fire trucks and other exploring opportunities for children available.

Salvation Army

Salvation Army will be taking applications for school supplies on Thursday, July 16 and Friday July 17, 2009

Thanks to Natalie Lindsay and her reliable volunteer, Tina Botts, for the good work developing an enrichment program at Tallmadge. These participants love their books!

We appreciate the support in advertising this great opportunity for Lancaster children. Lancaster City Schools administrator Steve Scott sent an automated phone message to over 4,000 Lancaster parents this week to help inform them of the lunch program. United Way of Fairfield County featured information in their monthly newsletter and many churches have help spread the word in their weekly bulletins and congregation newsletters.

The West After School Center's Summer Lunch Program is supported by a Feed Ohio grant from the Governor's Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives (GOFBCI), mini-grants from the Children's Hunger Alliance and Lancaster's First Presbyterian Church, the Lancaster Sherman Rotary, and the Ohio Department of Education.

SPOTLIGHT ON OUR SUMMER STAFF

Natalie Lindsay

Enrichment Program Leader

Tallmadge Community Learning Center

Natalie Lindsay, a member of the staff at the Tallmadge Community Learning Center, has developed a popular enrichment program in conjunction with the Summer Lunch Program at Tallmadge Elementary School. She is supported each day by a parent volunteer, Tina, and together they have motivated the children to maintain their reading skills by selecting and reading books from the book bin each day of the week with rewards on Fridays. Natalie lives in Baltimore, has an Ohio paraprofessional license, is an independent care provider, and is working on a degree in early childhood education at OU-Lancaster.

Angela Keller

Program Assistant

West After School Center

Angela has been a member of the WASC staff for more than five years. Her three children have been participants in the program and her oldest just graduated this spring from Lancaster High School. Angela serves in many capacities. This week she has helped make our Neighborhood Watch Program a success and played a key role in securing a "clean" food/health inspection at our Summer Lunch site at the Robert K. Fox Family Y.

West After School Center Board of Directors hosts Lancaster Principals and Superintendent for Lunch

Reflecting on a good year of before- and after-school programming in four of our elementary schools, the West After School Center Board of Directors provided lunch and hosted a planning meeting with elementary and middle level principals and Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Denise Callihan, to discuss what worked this past year, what didn't, and how to continuously improve for the 09-10 school year and expand extended learning opportunities to more schools. We appreciate the support and opportunity to work collaboratively with quality, visionary school leaders.

What Would Dad Say About Education Today?
By Dr. Paul Young

Father's Day is Sunday, June 21. With that in mind, former principal Paul Young considers what his dad might think about the state of education today. Down-home stories and common sense prevail in this retired principal's touching tribute to his dad.

FITNESS, NUTRITION and HEALTHY LIVING for KIDS

Watch  Healthy Living for Kids weekly on the Lancaster Schools Televison Network

The Goals for our Television Program:

1.  Create and sustain a community dialogue and awareness campaign that helps every individual learn to make healthy choices about what and how much they eat as well as how much daily exercise they get.

2.  Encourage children to engage in healthy and productive extra curricular activities at home and at school.

3.  Teach families how to prepare meals and economical family meals and snacks.

4.  Showcase the wealth of community resources and personnel that can help kids and families develop healthy lifestyles.

5.  Demonstrate the positive impact and benefits that participation in before and after school programs can have on children's mental health and social development.
