COMMUNITY NEWS

JOIN OUR NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH

In response to a informative community meeting held at the WASC late last month about the escalating drug traffic problem in our area, Tim Huston, WASC Emeritus Board Member, Bea Mills, Stanbery Area Watch, Chris Caton, Lancaster Police Department, and Toni Ashton, Prevention Works for a Free Fairfield County. will convene interested neighbors in the formation of a Neighborhood Watch Group on Tuesday evening, June 16, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. here at the WASC.  Neighborhood watches cost only the time it takes to care about each other - neighbors caring for neighbors. Thank you, Tim, and others who join this group of concerned citizens, for your efforts to keep our children safe and our neighborhood free of criminal activity.  For more information, call Chris Kuttler at 740-653-5678 or Tim Huston at 740-746-8876.

The West After School Center is a provider for the Ohio Benefit Bank. If you are in need of assistance related to childcare, food, health coverage or home energy needs, please call the WASC at 653-5678 and set up an appointment to do a quick check to see if you might qualify for help.

In these tough economic times everyone is looking to save wherever they can. This month, the American Public Transportation Association (APTA) and transit systems across the country will celebrate the

fourth annual National Dump the Pump day on

Thursday, June 18, 2009.
The day is designed to encourage people to get out of their cars and ride public transportation to raise awareness of the financial benefits of transit. Public transportation has the ability to save people money, conserve gasoline, and reduce the harmful greenhouse gases emitted into our environment.

FLAG DAY

about the history of Flag Day

Did you know?

It was on June 14, 1777, that John Adams introduced a resolution declaring the design of the United States to be "thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white on a blue field."
The U.S. flag has gone through many incarnations since that first design in 1777. According to
www.usflag.org, the design was changed in 1795 to add two more stars and stripes for Vermont and Kentucky. However, in 1818, when five stars were added to acknowledge the admission of Tennessee, Ohio, Louisiana, Indiana and Mississippi, it was realized that adding stars and stripes for each new state was impractical. At this time, the Flag Act of 1818 returned the flag to 13 stripes.

We appreciate the support in advertising this great opportunity for Lancaster children. Lancaster City Schools administrator Steve Scott sent an automated phone message to over 4,000 Lancaster parents this week to help inform them of the lunch program. United Way of Fairfield County featured information in their monthly newsletter and many churches have help spread the word in their weekly bulletins and congregation newsletters.

In the first six days of our summer program, we have served over 2,300 lunches at eight sites.  Next week we add the Family Y and Good Shepherd Church. Pass the word!

The West After School Center's Summer Lunch Program is supported by a Feed Ohio grant from the Governor's Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives (GOFBCI), mini-grants from the Children's Hunger Alliance and Lancaster's First Presbyterian Church, and the Ohio Department of Education.

Lancaster City Schools Superintendent, Dr. Denise Callihan,

voices strong support for the West After School Center's Summer Lunch Program.

COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS

We thank Connie Smith, OSU Extension Agency (and WASC Board member), and the members of the Fairfield County Master Gardeners for their lesson about planting and growing popcorn - which was planted in our garden. They also planted tomatoes and wave petunias. The tomatoes will supplement our summer and fall food programs and the flowers add curb appeal to our center.

Thank you for your ongoing support!

The West After School Center passed our regular health inspection this week without any findings!  We appreciate the good work of our kitchen and custodial staffs and the suggestions and support we receive from the Health Department officials so that our services are of consistent high-quality for our community.

What Would Dad Say About Education Today?

Watch  Healthy Living for Kids weekly on the Lancaster Schools Televison Network

The Goals for our Television Program:

1.  Create and sustain a community dialogue and awareness campaign that helps every individual learn to make healthy choices about what and how much they eat as well as how much daily exercise they get.

2.  Encourage children to engage in healthy and productive extra curricular activities at home and at school.

3.  Teach families how to prepare meals and economical family meals and snacks.

4.  Showcase the wealth of community resources and personnel that can help kids and families develop healthy lifestyles.

5.  Demonstrate the positive impact and benefits that participation in before and after school programs can have on children's mental health and social development.
