COMMUNITY NEWS

You can help support the

West After School Center

every time you shop at your local Krogers.  It's simple.  Just sign up and every time you shop and have your Krogers Plus Card scanned, a portion of the amount comes to the West After School Center. Encourage your friends to help us - and support our mission!

TO USE THE KROGER COMMUNITY REWARDS PROGRAM:

  1. Pick up a copy of the registration form from the WASC. It has the scanbar code on it.

  2. Simply take the form to the Customer Service Desk at your local Kroger store. They will scan it and your Kroger Plus Card, and with 72 hours a percentage of everything purchased at Krogers comes to the WASC - between now and April 30, 2010.

A new partnership coming in August, 2009.

Waldenbooks in the River Valley Mall will conduct a book drive during which patrons can buy and donate children's books to the West After School Centers. Watch here for a start date to be announced soon.  Support our local bookstore and our afterschool programs at the same time.

JOIN OUR NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH

Over 30 local residents attended an informative community meeting held at the WASC about forming a neighborhood watch. Tim Huston, WASC Emeritus Board Member, is the driving force in making this community service become a reality. For more information to learn how you can form a group in your area, call Chris Kuttler at 740-653-5678 or Tim Huston at 740-746-8876.

The West After School Center is a provider for the Ohio Benefit Bank. If you are in need of assistance related to childcare, food, health coverage or home energy needs, please call the WASC at 653-5678 and set up an appointment to do a quick check to see if you might qualify for help.

Our local Information & Referral of Fairfield County has just received notice of their designation as a 2-1-1 Call Center!!  They have  much work to do switching phone lines to be compatible with 2-1-1, but the bottom line is hopefully by August, local residents should be able to call 2-1-1 in Fairfield County and get I&R.

School Supplies Give-a-Way & Free Immunizations (spread the word)

Community Healthfest
Saturday, August 8th, 2009, 9:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.
Fairfield Christian Church/Academy, 1st floor
1965 N. Columbus Street

800 packets of school supplies will be given to children (of school age) in attendance, while supplies last. This all depends on the grant approval and price availability.

The purpose of the Community Healthfest is to encourage attendees to participate in health screenings (all free) at the same time as receiving supplies, giving them some health feedback for healthy lifestyle changes. Free screenings should include glucose, cholesterol, vision, hearing, height and weight, color blind test, blood pressure, bone density and possibly others. Immunizations will be given (as long as attendees have their records with them) free of charge, thanks to a sponsor and Fairfield Department of Health.

There will be some inflatable activities out by the playground to encourage fun exercise. This too, will be free. There is usually a small child's craft and face painting. The hope is to have fire trucks and other exploring opportunities for children available.

Salvation Army

Salvation Army will be taking applications for school supplies on Thursday, July 16 and Friday July 17, 2009
9:00am to 11:00 am and 1:00 pm to 3:30 pm

Sunday, August 9th from 3:00 – 5:00 pm at West Elementary, 625 Garfield Ave
500 Book bags filled with basic school supplies will be given away on a first come, first served basis
Children receiving the book bags need to be present
No verification is required
There will be carnival games and free food

Julie Bibler is managing the South School lunch and enrichment program site for the second year, assisted by her son Michael. During the school year, Julie is the site director for the after-school program at the West After School Center. South School is one of our busiest lunch program sites and Julie and Michael are kept busy when the school is the site for district summer school, Safety Town and kindergarten camps. The principal and staff of South School praise Julie for her work with this special program for kids.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT and COLLABORATION

Dr. Jeromey Sheets, Principal of Cedar Heights Elementary School, and Dr. Paul Young, Executive Director of the West After School Center, presented a concurrent session for nearly 50 Ohio principals and attendees at the 52 Annual OAESA Professional Conference and Trade Show this past week in Sandusky. FITNESS, NUTRITION and HEALTHY LIVING for KIDS

Watch  Healthy Living for Kids weekly on the Lancaster Schools Televison Network

The Goals for our Television Program:

1.  Create and sustain a community dialogue and awareness campaign that helps every individual learn to make healthy choices about what and how much they eat as well as how much daily exercise they get.

2.  Encourage children to engage in healthy and productive extra curricular activities at home and at school.

3.  Teach families how to prepare meals and economical family meals and snacks.

4.  Showcase the wealth of community resources and personnel that can help kids and families develop healthy lifestyles.

5.  Demonstrate the positive impact and benefits that participation in before and after school programs can have on children's mental health and social development.
