General Sherman Community Learning Center

Thomas Ewing Community Learning Center

The mission of the West After School Center is to enrich the educational, social, and cultural opportunities of students and families of our community.  The students at the General Sherman CLC and Thomas Ewing CLC have been making and donating blankets to needy families, walking to the West After School Center to assist with the Christmas party, and accompanying the younger students in the singing of Christmas Carols.  These extended learning opportunities allow our students to be exposed to new concepts, explore, become more responsible and interact socially with others.  This enriches the families of the neighborhood schools and helps to strengthen academic-based learning experiences during the students’ out-of-school time.

West After School Center

On Thursday, December 16^th, the West After School Center Board members hosted a Christmas party for the WASC students. General Sherman Community Learning Center participated in the festivities.  The students from GSCLC played Christmas carols on bells while the students from WASC sang.  The students practiced for weeks and with only one group rehearsal, gave an outstanding performance.  Thank you to Mrs. Nan Rowe, Site Director of GSCLC, and Ms. Sarah Stebelton, Academic Coach from WASC.

East Community Learning Center

We had a busy week before Christmas. Mrs. Draper helped the students complete their art project. We also made a solar system that was drawn with glue; the students then colored in the planets with chalk.  At our Christmas party, we made Santa and candy cane ornaments.  Mrs. Flowers and Miss McBroom painted the students faces while they played Bingo.  The party was a huge success and everyone enjoyed themselves.                                  

Cedar Heights Community Learning

The last week of school before break was full of activities for the students in the Cedar Community Learning Center.  On Thursday, we had our Christmas party.  We celebrated by decorating cookies, making cards for our families, and making some crafts to decorate our homes.  Friday, we had a visit from the Humane Society.  They brought a dog with them and we enjoyed learning about the animals at the shelter and how to care for those animals. 

Tallmadge Community Learning Center

We had a great final week before break at TCLC.  On Thursday, we sold candy canes before and after school.  With the proceeds, we were able to purchase a goat through the World Concern Organization.  We feel that this was a great lesson for all of the kids.  Thank you to all of the staff and parents who donated time or candy canes to the cause. 

On Friday, the students celebrated the upcoming break.  We watched “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” as well as frosted and decorated Christmas cookies.  Additionally, Mrs. Warner paid us another visit to teach us more cup stacking.  

COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS

The West After School Center wants to thank  Lutheran Social Services of Central Ohio and its Choice Food Pantry for providing families at all six of our 21^st Century CLC’s with bread, bagels and English muffins. They will continue to support us in the coming weeks and months.
