Tallmadge Community Learning Center

Last week at Tallmadge, author Margaret Wolford visited us and talked about writing.  She also discussed her book, No Sugar Coating, which she wrote in retirement after thirty-one years of teaching.  She shared with us where she gets her ideas for writing and the process of getting a book published.  We really enjoyed her stories and appreciate her spending the afternoon with us. We also finished Art Week with Miss Ashley.  Our pictures turned out great and we can't wait for the next Art Week.
 

West After School Center

Students at WASC enjoyed another visitor this week.  Mrs. Cindy Andres, the math Academic Coach from the Tallmadge Community Learning Center, came to see some math activities at WASC.  Mrs. Andres observed the students playing “Fill ‘er up”, a game using dice to practice their math facts.  Later in the week, the kids got to do one of their favorite activities, cup stacking! Mrs. Warner and her children came back to teach the children the cup stacking cycle.  The students had a great time learning the different types of cycles and practicing them when they participated in races against the teachers! The students ended the week with a short lesson on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Thank you Mrs. Lape!

The West After School Center wants to thank Mrs. Lape for six outstanding years of service. She will be moving onto a new job soon. We wish her much happiness and success in her new career!

Meet Ashley Fiore

Ashley Fiore the new Site Administrator at the West After School Center.  She is a native of New Lexington Ohio, and has a Bachelor of Science in Hearing, Speech and Language Science from Ohio University.  Ashley also serves as the Leap Track Academic Coach at the center.  In her free time Ashley likes to spend time with her family and friends and scrapbook.

National Thank Your Mentor Month

National Mentoring Month (NMM) is the time each year when our nation spotlights the importance of mentors and the need for every child to have a caring adult in his or her life. When you serve as a mentor, you enrich your own life as much as you do the life of a child. The West After School Center thanks all of our volunteers for their many hours of dedication and service!

every time you shop at your local Krogers.  It's simple.  Just sign up and every time you shop and have your Krogers Plus Card scanned, a portion of the amount comes to the West After School Center. Encourage your friends to help us - and support our mission!

Thanks to our supporters. 

We received over $100 during the second quarter of this rewards program!  (August, September & October).

TO USE THE KROGER COMMUNITY REWARDS PROGRAM:

1. Pick up a copy of the registration form from the WASC. It has the scan barcode on it.

2. Simply take the form to the Customer Service Desk at your local Kroger store. They will scan it and your Kroger Plus Card, and with 72 hours a percentage of everything purchased at Krogers comes to the WASC - between now and April 30, 2010.

The West After School Center wants to thank the Lutheran Social Services of Central Ohio and its Choice Food Pantry for becoming our newest partner. Lutheran Social Services has provided families at all four of our 21^st Century CLC’s with bread and will continue to support us in the coming weeks and months.

Watch  Healthy Living for Kids weekly on the Lancaster Schools Television Network

The Goals for our Television Program:

1. Create and sustain a community dialogue and awareness campaign that helps every individual learn to make healthy choices about what and how much they eat as well as how much daily exercise they get. 

2. Encourage children to engage in healthy and productive extra curricular activities at home and at school.

3. Teach families how to prepare foods and economical family meals and snacks.

4. Showcase the wealth of community resources and personnel that can help kids and families develop healthy lifestyles.

5. Demonstrate the positive impact and benefits that participation in before and after school programs can have on children's mental health and social development.
