General Sherman Community Learning Center

Thomas Ewing Community Learning Center

The first week back after the break saw the students at Thomas Ewing and General Sherman getting back into the routine of homework, math, and reading.  The end of the grading period is in several weeks so all of the students have been working to finish AR (Accelerated Reader) and other reports, complete missing assignments, and in to otherwise get caught up.  The Progress Book has been a great tool for the staff at the Centers to help the students complete assignments.  Because of the cold and snowy weather, exercise has come in the form of "school walking," a variation of "mall walking."  We are in the process of acquiring pedometers to track how many miles we walk.  Mr. Dorion visited Thomas Ewing last week to continue his unit on Tai Kwon Do. 

West After School Center

We are rounding the bend as the first half of the school year comes to an end.  It’s hard to believe that next week ends the second nine-week grading period.  Staff and volunteers are dedicated to keeping the West After School students on track.  Our students are still motivated to work hard and love coming to the Center.  WASC first graders have made the jump into the Leap Track reading program and are excited to be part of the big group.  We are now gearing up for the second half of the year and plan to make it just as exciting as the first.  Zumba dancing, karate, cup stacking, art, and music are still part of the fun activities after a week of hard work.

East Community Learning Center

On Friday, we introduced our “Countries Around the World” unit.  We all learned about passports and had a chance to look at real passports that belong to staff members.  Each student then had the opportunity to make his or her own passports to keep during the unit.  After learning about a country, students will paste the country’s flag into their passports so they can show off all of the countries they have learned about!                           

Cedar Heights Community Learning

We hope all the families of the Cedar Community Learning Center had a happy and safe holiday season. Now it is time to get back to work and have a good start to the New Year. The first week back was Art Week.  Mrs. Warner worked with us and taught us about the color wheel. Here are some facts we learned about the color wheel. A typical artist's paint or pigment color wheel includes the blue, red, and yellow primary colors. The corresponding secondary colors are green, orange, and violet. The tertiary colors are red–orange, red–violet, yellow–orange, yellow–green, blue–violet, and blue–green. Art is fun and it stimulates our creativity and our senses.

Tallmadge Community Learning Center

The first week of 2011 was a good one.  In trying to become more efficient, we started a new process for ordering dinners.  We also put up a new whiteboard for our parent information.  It replaces the paper-covered corkboard that was badly faded from the sunlight.   

Now that we are back in session, we are looking forward to continuing to grow and improve.  We will be having our parent conferences this month to better inform parents of their children’s progress.  Additionally, grade cards come out soon so we can hopefully also see progress in our students’ grades.   

With the up coming grade cards, we also anticipate some new referrals.  As a staff, we are looking forward to an exciting new year. 

COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS

The West After School Center wants to thank  Lutheran Social Services of Central Ohio and its Choice Food Pantry for providing families at all six of our 21^st Century CLC’s with bread, bagels and English muffins. They will continue to support us in the coming weeks and months.
