AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAMMING NEWS

                  East Community Learning Center

We had a great turnout at parent conferences this week.  It is important to have open communication between school, afterschool, and home.  Thanks to all of the parents who came in for conferences.

Mrs. Winters was back again this week.  She taught students lots of daily living skills such as hand washing, daily servings of food, and individuality.  Make sure to check out videos of these activities on Facebook!

       Youth Development

The second week at East Community Learning Center continued our focus on nutrition and goal setting.  Students worked on filling a behavior chart by earning stickers for following directions, not tattling, and maintaining personal space. After reviewing the USDA guidelines for the daily recommended amounts of fruits, vegetables, grains, and proteins, we discussed the importance of eating healthy foods and how to make our favorite meals more healthy. Students successfully completed their charts and earned a healthy pizza party! We made healthy pizzas out of a whole wheat sandwich thin, pizza sauce, low-fat mozzarella, and turkey pepperoni. After we ate our pizzas, we discussed how our recipe was a healthy and delicious alternative to regular pizza.

                  Cedar Heights Community Learning

We have been having a ton of fun in math!  Mrs. Warner took some time on Thursday and worked on math games with our first grade/ kindergarten group.  We played battle stacks with math facts.  Whoever solved the math problem first got to knock over his/her opponent's stack of cups.  The first grade and kindergarten kids really enjoyed their time with Mrs. Warner.
Also at Cedar CLC, we are starting an anti-bullying task force.  We will be making posters to hang in the school about being positive and friendly to everyone.  We will also be making a video to put on our Facebook page.  We will let you know when it is completed so you can check it out.

            Tallmadge Community Learning Center

As we progress through our parent conference schedule, I have been pleased with the large number of parents who have participated.  It is nice to be able to tell the majority of parents overwhelmingly positive comments concerning their child.  It is also nice to hear parents tell us how the afterschool program has helped their child improve both academically and socially.

We had art all week at Tallmadge Community Learning Center.  The students learned a little bit about Canada as the art project was chalk drawings inspired by Canadian Native American art.  The end product was very bright and colorful.  All of the students did a great job.  Thanks to Ms. Ashly for devising the project and also visiting on Friday to help us finish up.

This week at the West After School Center, the students had the opportunity to make ice cream.  Using the scientific method in Dr. Bob Horton’s book, Acres of Adventure, the children learned facts which included  the freezing point of water, the agricultural products used in the production of ice cream, and the mechanical action of physical motion.  The students worked in teams to complete this task and we cultivated excitement in learning science and agriculture.

General Sherman Community Learning Center

Thomas Ewing Community Learning Center

Linda Hecker and Cindy Reef, guidance counselors at General Sherman and Thomas Ewing, were guest speakers this week at the afterschool programs.  The topic was goal setting and how setting goals can affect our lives.  Students were presented with the ideas of long-term and short-term goals-how to go about making a goal and whether a long-term or short-term goal was the best for them.  In the next few weeks, the students will be writing a short-term academic and personal goal for themselves.  It is our hope and anticipation that these academic and personal goals will be attained in the upcoming weeks.

February is Children’s Dental Health Month

National Children's Dental Health Month has been observed each February for more than 55 years. It serves as an annual reminder to children, parents and caregivers of the importance of healthy oral health habits. We cannot allow children’s dental checkups to be missed or their dental health to suffer because of the economic downturn. If you need assistance, contact a program director.

February is American Heart Month

This is the month set aside by the National Heart Association as a time to focus on our cardio-vascular health. We all know how important it is to live a healthier lifestyle, so let’s commit to give the gift of health to those we love and focus on our heart health in the month of February.  Why not change Friday night pizza night at your house to Friday night take a walk night?  Grab your spouse, your kids, your best friend, and your dog and take a walk.  Exercising is so much more fun when you are spending time with those you love.
