COMMUNITY LEARNING CENTERS

Our mission to is provide programs and services that enrich the educational, social, and cultural opportunities of students in our community

AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAMMING NEWS

See what we've been doing this week -- after-school, and meet some of the special people that make our programs work!

Cedar Community Learning Center

This week, Cedar Heights CLC participated in “Jump Rope for Heart.” Students are focusing on jumping for the cause of a healthy heart and raising awareness that having a strong healthy heart means you can live longer and happier. It has been encouraging to see the students excited about jumping. Jump, kids, jump!

East Community Learning Center

The students at the East Community Learning Center could not pass up the opportunity to play in the snow!  They bundled up in their coats, hats, gloves, and boots and competed in the newest Olympic event-snowman building.  The snow was not cooperating and would not pack, but the students were creative and successful in the allotted time of 15 minutes.  Students were placed in groups of 2-3 and given the instruction-build a snowman!  They were not given any tools other than their own creativity.  The pictures highlight the gold and silver champions of the 2010 snowman-building Olympic event.

Tallmadge Community Learning Center

Last week was a short one at Tallmadge, but we managed to have lots of fun!  We had an ice cream party on Friday as a reward for hard work and improved grades.  For fun Friday activities, the students had a choice between watching Finding Nemo or playing games like Scrabble, Connect Four, Monopoly or Boggle.  Keep up the good work.

West After School Center

The first graders at WASC enjoyed their first Spanish lesson with Mr. Escarpeta this week!  Mr. E read a story to the children in Spanish and had them repeat the sentences.  He also pointed out key vocabulary words and gave the students a chance to write them down so they could see the spelling of the words.

We also had a chance to play Wii this week.  The children really got into the games and burned up a little bit of the energy they had saved up from the snow days.

Students also had a chance to finish making their quilt blocks from last week.  We have a number of these colorful blocks to hang up in the Center. Stop by and check them out.

Thank you!

The West After School Center wants to thank Dr. Paul Young for presenting a Step Up to Quality in-service on Saturday. Thirty eight people from five community providers attended the class on "Multi-tasking is a Myth." This was a welcome opportunity for staff to discuss and identify strengths and weaknesses and to reflect on positive practices.

Busy parents can take advantage of the availability of supper at WASC, Cedar Heights, East, and Tallmadge CLC, Monday-Friday, throughout the year.  The snacks we serve are free, and the supper program (5:30-6:00 pm) is open to any child in our programs. The WASC is the sponsor of the snacks and meal programs for the after school programs serving children at East, West, Cedar Heights, and Tallmadge.

Happy Birthday to our West After School Center Office Manager, Chris Kuttler.

Her birthday is February 29th. She is only 13!

The Goals for our Television Program:

  1. Create and sustain a community dialogue and awareness campaign that helps every individual learn to make healthy choices about what and how much they eat as well as how much daily exercise they get.

  2. Encourage children to engage in healthy and productive extra curricular activities at home and at school.

  3. Teach families how to prepare foods and economical family meals and snacks.

  4. Showcase the wealth of community resources and personnel that can help kids and families develop healthy lifestyles.

  5. Demonstrate the positive impact and benefits that participation in before and after school programs can have on children's mental health and social development.
