Are you interested in joining a group of colleagues that will review afterschool licensing and make recommendations for revisions to appropriate state agencies?  This is a opportunity for those in the field to help describe a "better fit" for 21st CCLCs in this compliance process. Now is the time for action. Commendations to the Ohio AfterSchool Network for supporting and leading this initiative. If you would be interested in being part of this work group, please email Jen Bavry at Jbavry@occrra.org.

Parent Education Class Tours WASC

"I want to thank you on behalf of my Parent Education class students for taking us for a visit. The tour of the West After School facility and both you and Julie's presentations were very well received by my class. The students were very impressed by the organization of the center and were particularly appreciative of your dedication to the well-being of children.
They took with them the idea of a great community resource that helps families, children, and teachers."

- Dr. Qiuping Cao, Professor

Look Inside the After School Programs in Lancaster This Week

Cedar Community Learning Center

Meet one of our staff members

Jimmy Gang started as a volunteer for the after school program during the 2007-2008 school year. Jimmy displayed excellent commitment and dedication for the students in the program and believes in the vision of after school. During his year here as a volunteer, he was attending Ohio University-Lancaster as a Computer Science major. Today, Jimmy is part of the program staff of the Cedar CLC and has decided to major in education and become a history teacher. He says a major influence to change majors has been his experience working with the students in the after school program. Glad to have you on our staff, Mr. Gang!

Tallmadge Community Learning Center

Mr. Bill Huffman, a Humane Officer with the Fairfield Area Humane Society, and Mack, his Great Dane, recently visited the Tallmadge Community Learning Center. Mr. Huffman talked with the students and staff about the importance of proper animal care. He answered many questions for the students and explained what the humane society does on a daily basis. We thank Mr. Huffman for his visit.

Our students completed their celebration of Valentine's Day by listening to Lancaster resident John Coen, Director of Creative Outreach Ministries at First United Methodist Church, explain his old-fashioned valentine collection. The students learned about the history of this special holiday, traditions and customs in other countries, and were able to enjoy a close inspection of artifacts from the past. We were impressed to learn that Mr. Coen will soon be traveling to Malaysia to teach puppetry and clowning to United Methodists in that part of the world.  We wish him safe travels.

MEAL PROGRAMS at the WASC

Busy parents can take advantage of the availability of supper at the WASC, Cedar Heights, and Tallmadge, Monday-Friday, throughout the year.  The snacks we serve are free, and the supper program (5:30-6:00 pm) is open to any child in our programs or others that would sign up for supper, based on qualification requirements similar to the school lunch program. The WASC is the sponsor of the snacks and meal programs for the after school programs serving children at East, West, Cedar Heights, and Tallmadge.

Watch  Healthy Living for Kids weekly on the LSN.

Our Goals:

1.  Create and sustain a community dialogue and awareness campaign that helps every individual learn to make healthy choices about what and how much they eat as well as how much daily exercise they get.

2.  Encourage children to engage in healthy and productive extra curricular activities at home and at school.

3.  Teach families how to prepare meals and economical family meals and snacks.

4.  Showcase the wealth of community resources and personnel that can help kids and families develop healthy lifestyles.

5.  Demonstrate the positive impact and benefits that participation in before and after school programs can have on children's mental health and social development.

February is National Children's Dental Health Month.

Developing healthy kids with good oral health habits begins at an early age, and scheduling regular dental visits helps children get a good start on a lifetime of healthy teeth and gums. Look for our show coming later this month when Healthy Living For Kids host Angi Marinacci-Young takes our viewers inside the offices of Dr. Jennifer Lape and Dr. Glenn Burns in Lancaster for a first-hand tour of what kids can expect and learn about dental care --- from the dentist's chair!
