Our thanks and gratitude are extended to the Good News Clown Crew for bringing their talented and entertaining act to our Family Night Event this past Wednesday evening at the West After School Center. An audience of nearly 75 enjoyed the magic acts, the music, and the comedy that this group of performers from Lancaster's First United Methodist Church shared.

Did You Know?

There are benefits for being in an afterschool program.

Read more at the right

In a two-year study of promising after-school programs released in October 2007, data from 35 high-quality after-school programs (19 elementary, 16 middle) that served low-income children and youth was analyzed. The programs were located in 14 cities in 8 states. A total of 2,914 students (1,796 elementary, 1,118 middle school), some of whom attended the programs and some who did not, participated in the study.

The findings indicate that both elementary and middle school students enrolled in the after-school programs and other structured activities, compared to students who were largely unsupervised in the after-school hours, experienced relative gains in their math achievement test scores, work habits at school, and compliance at home, and relative reductions in misconduct. Elementary program participants also experienced relative gains in grades, task persistence, social skills, and pro-social behavior, and reductions in aggressive behavior, compared to their classmates who were unsupervised after school. And, middle school program participants reported relative reductions in their use of substances (alcohol, tobacco, drugs) compared to their unsupervised classmates.

The data continues to clearly demonstrate the need for high quality, after school program opportunities that extend the learning day for children and youth of all ages.

Tallmadge Community Learning Center

The Tallmadge Community Learning Center is celebrating the holidays each Friday in December. On Dec. 5th, the students made gingerbread houses, complete with all the trimmings! Everyone enjoyed decorating their houses and landscapes with an assortment of candies and treats.

This week, the students at the WASC made Christmas ornaments to adorn our tree. Tissue angels, puzzle piece wreaths, colorful God's eyes and countdown chains add the sparkle of homemade delight to our Center. Please stop in and share the warmth of the "handmade" Christmas treasures.

WASC students also enjoy learning math facts with their Flashmaster instructional aids. To learn more about Flashmasters being used at our afterschool programs, click HERE.

MEAL PROGRAMS at the WASC

Busy parents can take advantage of the availability of supper at the WASC, Cedar Heights, and Tallmadge, Monday-Friday, throughout the year.  The snacks we serve are free, and the supper program (5:30-6:00 pm) is open to any child in our programs or others that would sign up for supper, based on qualification requirements similar to the school lunch program. The WASC is a sponsor of afterschool meals for the centers serving children at East, West, Cedar Heights, and Tallmadge.

Our Goals:

1.  Create and sustain a community dialogue and awareness campaign that helps every individual learn to make healthy choices about what and how much they eat as well as how much daily exercise they get.

2.  Encourage children to engage in healthy and productive extra curricular activities at home and at school.

3.  Teach families how to prepare meals and economical family meals and snacks.

4.  Showcase the wealth of community resources and personnel that can help kids and families develop healthy lifestyles.

5.  Demonstrate the positive impact and benefits that participation in before and after school programs can have on children's mental health and social development.

What does "eat better" really mean?

Eating better means making healthy choices. The goal is to have a balanced diet with enough vitamins and minerals, but not too many calories. Some people may need to add more fruits and vegetables or whole grains, while cutting back on sugary snacks. Others may need to eat more protein. The idea is to achieve a good balance, and moderation in how much you eat.

The good news is that there are guidelines, suggestions, and help to make sure that the kids in your life are eating better every day. Click HERE to learn more.
