General Sherman Community Learning Center

Thomas Ewing Community Learning Center

Students in the afterschool programs earn extended school time when attending on a regular basis, parents and teachers are noticing the results. One parent commented that his child had never been on the "B" honor roll until now and was very appreciative of the time his daughter has spent in the afterschool program. With that in mind, the Thomas Ewing and General Sherman CLC's would like to acknowledge those students with perfect attendance for the month of November.  From Ewing, we have Katie Heimberger, James Glenn, Joseph Wilhousky, Breanna Welch, and Gabby Roth. Sherman perfect attendees are  Kyla Scott and Hope Kimble. These Sherman students are highlighted in the picture of some of the students displaying their tie-dyed T-shirts.  Mrs. Draper used this project as an art activity.

West After School Center

The students at the West After School Center have one thing on their minds….. CHRISTMAS!  For the last few weeks, the children have been working on Christmas songs that will be sung at their Christmas party on December 16^th.  Mrs. Rowe and the students from General Sherman will join in our musical celebration and play bells to their favorite songs.  We have made ornaments for our tree and read stories in preparation for the big day.  One first grade student, Benjamin Wing, sang his own version of “Deck the Halls” while the kindergarten students decorated our Christmas tree.  Benjamin and all of the other children are definitely caught up in the spirit of the holiday.

East Community Learning Center

Mr. Dorion came back this week, and had many activities for the students to do.  First, students played the roles of Santa and reindeer, with the goal of delivering toys to each destination.  The reindeer pulled Santa on a parachute (his sleigh) around the gym to deliver the toys. Students also participated in relay races and volleyball.  Finally, we made three-dimensional snowflakes to hang up in the halls of the school. 

Cedar Heights Community Learning

Last week at the Cedar Community Learning Center, we had a full week of activities.  Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday were filled with homework, reading, and math skills.  On Wednesday, we took a little break from Leap Track and had a great gym class with Mr. Dorion. On Friday, we went to the computer lab and wrote letters to our pen pals at the West Afterschool Center.  This has been a great activity; not only do we build on our writing and typing skills, but we get to make new friends too!  Also on Friday, we had competitive cup stacking as a Fun Friday activity.  Cup stacking works both sides of our brain and helps with hand-eye coordination and reading skills. 

Tallmadge Community Learning Center

Last week was very eventful for the Tallmadge Community Learning Center.  Jayne Cash from New Horizons Youth & Family Center visited us Monday through Thursday.  She met with each group daily to discuss feelings, emotions, and self-esteem.  On Tuesday, we also had Mr. Dorian at our Center doing gym.  Anyone who likes the game show “Minute to Win It” would have enjoyed Mr. Dorian’s class.  He had the students doing a couple of the tasks from the show and they all had a great time.

Finally, on Friday, Maria came by for Zumba.  Each time Maria comes to TCLC, we have more and more students really getting into it.  At first, many of the boys were hesitant but now they are becoming very enthused. 

Remember, only two weeks until break.  Parents, we can use your help to keep your child(ren) focused.  If we stay focused and work hard, we can get a lot accomplished before the well-deserved break. 

COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS

The West After School Center wants to thank  Lutheran Social Services of Central Ohio and its Choice Food Pantry for providing families at all six of our 21^st Century CLC’s with bread, bagels and English muffins. They will continue to support us in the coming weeks and months.
