AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAMMING NEWS

See what we've been doing this week -- after-school, and meet some of the special people that make our programs work!

Cedar Community Learning Center

Spring is coming to Ohio! Our students enjoy going outside every day for 10 to 15 minutes to burn up some calories and release some energy before starting the after school program. We exercise our bodies before working on our minds at Cedar CLC!

East Community Learning Center

Each month, all the after school programs are required to participate in a fire drill to prepare the students in case of such an emergency. In addition to fire dills, the state of Ohio conducts a statewide tornado drill in early spring in preparation for the severe weather season. During these drills, the National Weather Service issues test tornado warnings, and local Emergency Alert Systems are activated along with outdoor warning sirens. Schools participate in this statewide tornado drill. The students in the East Community Learning Center also prepared for any severe weather by taking their positions along an interior wall with their heads covered.

On Friday, several staff members participated in the Early Childhood Conference held at Ohio University-Lancaster. Staff members selected topics of interest and received Step Up to Quality or continuing education hours.

Students on Friday were completing butterfly projects and enjoying a game of Gladiator; while the older students were crocheting, students in the first grade made a yarn doll.  They will continue the project next week to finish dressing the dolls

Tallmadge Community Learning Center

On Friday, March 26th, at Tallmadge, we had an Art Exhibit.  Our families attended and we all had a great time sharing our art with each other.  We displayed art we have been working on over the past eight weeks with Mrs. Draper and the staff at Tallmadge.  Our exhibit included clay pinch pots, wood beaded necklaces and bracelets, masks, tissue paper boxes, fingerprint art and pastel drawings of flowers.  We want to thank our families for attending our exhibit

West After School Center

Students had the chance to play Wii and burn up some energy.  We also did springtime and nutrition activities to talk about the changing of seasons and the importance of good nutrition.  In addition, we made cards for our loved ones.  Students are gearing up for Spring Break and are excited to be able to enjoy warmer weather!

MEAL PROGRAMS at the WASC

Busy parents can take advantage of the availability of supper at WASC, Cedar Heights, East, and Tallmadge CLC, Monday-Friday, throughout the year.  The snacks we serve are free, and the supper program (5:30-6:00 pm) is open to any child in our programs. The WASC is the sponsor of the snacks and meal programs for the after school programs serving children at East, West, Cedar Heights, and Tallmadge.

Thanks to our supporters.

We received over $80 during the third quarter of this rewards program!  (November, December & January).

TO USE THE KROGER COMMUNITY REWARDS PROGRAM:

FITNESS, NUTRITION and HEALTHY LIVING for KIDS

Watch  Healthy Living for Kids weekly on the Lancaster Schools Television Network

The Goals for our Television Program:

  1. Create and sustain a community dialogue and awareness campaign that helps every individual learn to make healthy choices about what and how much they eat as well as how much daily exercise they get.

  2. Encourage children to engage in healthy and productive extra curricular activities at home and at school.

  3. Teach families how to prepare foods and economical family meals and snacks.

  4. Showcase the wealth of community resources and personnel that can help kids and families develop healthy lifestyles.

  5. Demonstrate the positive impact and benefits that participation in before and after school programs can have on children's mental health and social development.
