A 21st CENTURY COMMUNITY LEARNING CENTER
Our mission to is provide programs and services that enrich the educational, social, and cultural opportunities of students in our community

from the office of Dr. Paul G. Young, Executive Director

This weekly update is distributed via email to the WASC Board of Directors & Staff, Volunteers, School Staffs, Parents, State and National Afterschool Advocates, Providers, and Community Leaders

A new amendment to the National School Board Association Policies and Beliefs manual regarding Extended Learning Opportunities was approved on Friday, April 3, 2009 by NSBA Delegate Assembly at their national gathering. It sets a strong tone in support of after-school programs nationally.

“NSBA encourages local school districts to partner with schools, community, and municipal organizations in the development of extended-day learning programs and activities. NSBA believes that before and after-school as well as summer programs, are effective strategies for improving academic achievement, student wellness, preventing juvenile crime, fostering 21st Century Skills and for building and strengthening positive relationships between schools and communities.”

U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan will be speaking at the Afterschool for All Challenge “Breakfast of Champions” later this month. This is an important moment for afterschool. While the grim economic situation poses huge challenges for programs and the families we serve, we also are poised to see the benefits from a decade of intensive work. Policy makers and the public increasingly recognize that afterschool programs are vitally important to families, communities and our nation – now and for our future.

Exciting news to share!

from the Afterschool Alliance

A decade of research, evaluations, and review of literature provides powerful evidence that afterschool programs make a difference in the lives of youth who attend. Afterschool programs improve academic performance, social and developmental outcomes, contribute to healthy lifestyle options, and prevent many risky behaviors. The key factors in supporting positive outcomes include access to and sustained participation in quality programming with strong partnerships with schools, families and the community.

GOOD NEWS!

WEST AFTER SCHOOL CENTER IS AWARDED THE

FEED OHIO SUMMER LUNCH PROGRAM GRANT for 2009

The West After School Center has been awarded a grant to further expand the Summer Lunch Program for the children  of Lancaster and the surrounding area this summer, beginning June 4. This competitive grant is awarded by the Governor's Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives (GOFBCI). Last year, the WASC served over 20,000 lunches during the summer months, and we hope to increase participation and meet the needs of our children in families in three additional serving sites this summer in Lancaster east-side neighborhoods.

The economic downturn has challenged many families' ability to adequately feed their children. Help us spread the word that a free lunch is available Monday-Friday in nine locations this summer.

Let's work to feed our kids - and have fun together doing it!

Look Inside the After School Programs in Lancaster This Week

Cedar Community Learning Center

Click HERE to see Dr. Young, WASC Executive Director, accept thank-you notes from Mrs. Tracey's 4th grade class and share her students' excitement with their new MIMIO interactive white board which is shared between the Cedar CLC and their school - a positive example of how a collaborative partnership benefits both schools and after-school programs and produces seamless learning experiences for children.

Eastside Center for Success

Mrs. Draper always plans interesting and exciting art activities for our students. This week Eastside Students are working with chalk to provide some colorful drawings.

Tallmadge Community Learning Center

Students at the Tallmadge Community Learning Center had the opportunity recently to practice their reading fluency, expression, and confidence with some fun scripts during a day of Readers’ Theater. The students worked in groups of four, each with a different script, to practice and rehearse their lines. Later in the day, several groups were able to “present” their stories to the entire group.

West After School Center

The students at the West After School Center have been given the opportunity to exercise and play Wii Fit through the generosity of the Fairfield Medical Center. We identified the children who had never played Wii before. These students were given 10 minutes to play then we rotated new students into the game. What a way to spend a fun Friday!

Click HERE to see Wii Bowling in action

Children extend their academic learning time at the WASC daily, and then on Fridays or the final day of any week, they enjoy FUN DAY activities such as you will see in  the video at the right. And their learning during these activities - especially the development of their creative thinking - is just as valuable - if not more so - than in all their other endeavors.

Our Goals:

1.  Create and sustain a community dialogue and awareness campaign that helps every individual learn to make healthy choices about what and how much they eat as well as how much daily exercise they get.

2.  Encourage children to engage in healthy and productive extra curricular activities at home and at school.

3.  Teach families how to prepare meals and economical family meals and snacks.

4.  Showcase the wealth of community resources and personnel that can help kids and families develop healthy lifestyles.

5.  Demonstrate the positive impact and benefits that participation in before and after school programs can have on children's mental health and social development.
