Happy Easter

A decade of research, evaluations, and review of literature provides powerful evidence that afterschool programs make a difference in the lives of youth who attend. Afterschool programs improve academic performance, social and developmental outcomes, contribute to healthy lifestyle options, and prevent many risky behaviors. The key factors in supporting positive outcomes include access to and sustained participation in quality programming with strong partnerships with schools, families and the community.

GOOD NEWS!

WEST AFTER SCHOOL CENTER IS AWARDED THE

FEED OHIO SUMMER LUNCH PROGRAM GRANT for 2009

The West After School Center has been awarded a grant to further expand the Summer Lunch Program for the children  of Lancaster and the surrounding area this summer, beginning June 4. This competitive grant is awarded by the Governor's Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives (GOFBCI). Last year, the WASC served over 20,000 lunches during the summer months, and we hope to increase participation and meet the needs of our children in families in three additional serving sites this summer in Lancaster east-side neighborhoods.

The economic downturn has challenged many families' ability to adequately feed their children. Help us spread the word that a free lunch is available Monday-Friday in nine locations this summer.

Let's work to feed our kids - and have fun together doing it!

Look Inside the After School Programs in Lancaster This Week

Cedar Community Learning Center

Last week, Dr. Paul Young. Executive Director of the WASC, Julie Bibler, Site Director of WASC, Jane Hart, Site Director of the Tallmadge CLC and Moses Garcia, Site Director of the Cedar CLC, all had the opportunity to attend the National Afterschool Association Convention in New Orleans, LA. The convention was full of workshops, resources and network opportunities to empower us all and bring back fresh ideas and collaborative efforts to improve the quality of our after school programs. We genuinely hope that we can bring the best service we can to our local communities and empower our students and families in ways that help them achieve success.

Eastside Center for Success

The Eastside Center for Success sponsors the Market Day Program for families at East School and the surrounding community to raise funds for supplies for the after-school program.

Tallmadge Community Learning Center

These first grade students at the Tallmadge Community Learning Center enjoy some time working with tangram pattern cards and blocks during the afterschool program.

West After School Center

This past week the students at the West After School Center made David McKee's patchwork elephant, Elmer. During snack time they combined art and literacy and opened a new world by reading Elmer and Wilbur. Wilbur is Elmer's ventriloquist cousin, a cheeky black and white elephant that is playing a joke on Wilbur by hiding up a tree. David McKee has written many children's books featuring Elmer. Check one out at your local library!

MEAL PROGRAMS at the WASC

Busy parents can take advantage of the availability of supper at the WASC, Cedar Heights, and Tallmadge, Monday-Friday, throughout the year.  The snacks we serve are free, and the supper program (5:30-6:00 pm) is open to any child in our programs or others that would sign up for supper, based on qualification requirements similar to the school lunch program. The WASC is the sponsor of the snacks and meal programs for the after school programs serving children at East, West, Cedar Heights, and Tallmadge.

Watch  Healthy Living for Kids weekly on the LSN.

Our Goals:

1.  Create and sustain a community dialogue and awareness campaign that helps every individual learn to make healthy choices about what and how much they eat as well as how much daily exercise they get.

2.  Encourage children to engage in healthy and productive extra curricular activities at home and at school.

3.  Teach families how to prepare meals and economical family meals and snacks.

4.  Showcase the wealth of community resources and personnel that can help kids and families develop healthy lifestyles.

5.  Demonstrate the positive impact and benefits that participation in before and after school programs can have on children's mental health and social development.

Watch the West After School Center's newest show about the importance of proper dental care for children featuring the staff of Gentle Dental Care in Lancaster. Watch Host Angi Marinacci-Young go through a routine dental exam and ask the questions that all kids would like to ask but may be afraid to.
